Description Sammy 2026-01-31 16:08:25 UTC
Version 2.44.5 update does not seem to support certain image types, causing applications like gkrellm etc. core dump. Version 2.44.4 works fine.

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1.Update to version 2.44.5
2.Start gkrellm (probably other applications to - xpm)
3.core dump

Comment 1 Sammy 2026-02-03 15:03:26 UTC
I remember this was an issue some time ago when support for certain bitmaps was no longer supported. However, a remedy was found or support was turned on in another package. Please address this issue because older X applications that use xpm etc do not function anymore.

Comment 2 Benjamin Gilbert 2026-02-03 15:47:40 UTC
When gdk-pixbuf first disabled XPM support by default, Fedora moved the XPM loader to the gdk-pixbuf2-modules-extra package, and packages that require XPM acquired a dependency on that package. 2.44.5 has now gained support for loading XPM securely through Glycin, but this requires a newer version of Glycin, and gdk-pixbuf does not fall back to the old loader if a new enough Glycin is not available. It seems this problem was anticipated [1] during upstream code review but the comment seems to have been missed.

glycin that does that is at 2.1beta. I am not experienced enough to turn on "extras" in glycin build and deal with dependencies in the spec file. I also found an article braggin about this:

This only affects updates-testing. This issue was caught before it reached Fedora 43 updates or even Fedora 44 & Rawhide.

The new version 2.44.6 also causes crashes (gkrellm) for the same reasons. Downgrading to 2.44.4 build resolves the problem. Please remove this build or build it with appropriate support if possible. Thanks!
