Gtk window decorations fail (disappear and are unuseable) under Compiz. Selecting Emerald will provide controls, but selecting Gtk consistently fails. Reproducible: Always
I can confirm that the GTK window decorator is not working under compiz here on my system F43. Same issue here on two of my desktops. It started only a few weeks ago AFAICT, which is weird because the compiz packages are over 7 months old, so the root cause is something outside those packages: $ rpm -qai 'compiz*' | grep -E '(Name|Date)' Name : compiz Install Date: Tue 28 Oct 2025 06:35:54 PM CET Build Date : Thu 24 Jul 2025 01:03:26 AM CEST Name : compizconfig-python Install Date: Tue 28 Oct 2025 06:36:48 PM CET Build Date : Wed 23 Jul 2025 10:32:48 PM CEST Name : compiz-manager Install Date: Tue 28 Oct 2025 06:38:16 PM CET Build Date : Thu 24 Jul 2025 01:00:10 AM CEST I was sort of suspecting it was some recently rebuilt package that included compiler flags that enabled this "stack smashing" detection, but even /usr/bin/gtk-window-decorator is part of that old compiz package. My workaround for now (same CRITICAL as gtk-window-decorator but no stack smashing detected, so it actually runs and displays): # dnf install emerald $ emerald (emerald:1803876): Wnck-CRITICAL **: 13:09:13.504: wnck_set_client_type: changing the client type is not supported.
I've rebuilt the compiz package with the following change, and my gtk-window-decorator borders are back: -make %{?_smp_mflags} V=1 +make %{?_smp_mflags} V=1 CFLAGS="%{optflags} -fno-stack-protector" Available at https://dl.marmotte.net/rpms/fedora/43/x86_64/ - Definitely not a fix, more like workaround n°2.
Interesting I am running compiz on f43 and it runs fine. Isn't it related to the recent marco update, i.e. bug 2437512. In such case just rebuild should be enough, but I didn't rebuilt it for f43. Maybe it's because I am not running marco? Never mind, I will rather rebuilt it.
Rebuild for marco is tracked in bug 2437512. If it also resolves your problem, please close this bug.
Update installed, and it seems to be working well again. Thank you!
