The upstream bug for this issue is: https://sourceware.org/bugzilla/show_bug.cgi?id=33639.  The fix for this issue was in binutils/dwarf.c, which is only used for the binutils tools, readelf, objdump, etc.  This file is not compiled into GDB, and as such, this bug does not impact GDB at all.
