previously, support for switching between virtual terminals -- or between virtual terminals and the X Window System -- was not fully implemented for newer Intel graphics cards. Users experienced a wide range of problems when they switched, including: losing the display completely; having the display filled with random, pulsating colors; receiving "out of range" or "can't display this mode" errors; the system ceasing to respond; or the system restarting. Cards affected included those with the G4X, G965, GM45, Q43, and Q45 chipsets. The driver now includes full support for switching to, from, and between virtual terminals, meaning that users can switch safely without encountering the problems that they experienced previously.

Description Ahmed Kamal 2007-06-19 22:01:53 UTC
Description of problem:
During bootup, X starts correctly. If the user switches to a tty display
(CTRL+ALT+F1), then switches back to X (CTRL+ALT+F7), the display is
many times lost, becomes blurry/pulsating/ colors!

Version-Release number of selected component (if applicable):
xorg-x11-drv-i810-1.6.5-9.2.el5
xorg-x11-server-Xorg-1.1.1-48.13.0.1.el5
kernel-2.6.18-8.1.6.el5

How reproducible:
perhaps 50% of the times

Steps to Reproduce:
1. Start RHEL5, login through GUI
2. switch to tty1, login, switch back to X
3. repeat step2 a few times, problem appears

Actual results:
X display is lost (pulsating colors)

Expected results:
X should work as in first startup

Comment 4 Yan Li 2007-08-02 05:59:15 UTC
This problem is seen on all IBM desktop computers (ThinkCentre) with a Intel 965
video card.

Comment 5 Adam Goode 2007-10-04 15:21:55 UTC
I am seeing this on a Dell Optiplex 745 with ADD2 card. I can trigger this
immediately, as soon as I switch to console. The text mode never appears. Upon
switching back to X, the VGA output is fine, the DVI output goes nuts. The crazy
display is different based on the position of the mouse. With the mouse in some
places, the display is static, in other places the display constantly shifts
horizontally.

Comment 7 Adam Goode 2007-11-02 17:12:17 UTC
It seems this particular problem is fixed in rawhide. I can switch back and
forth without the psychedelic pulsating screen in X.

Still get no text mode at all though. VTs are completely blank.

Comment 8 Andrew Case 2007-11-05 19:31:57 UTC
I have a very similar but possibly more hostile situation.

I can get reproduce the pulsating colors by switching from tty1 to X repeatedly
if I continue to switch back and forth, sometimes it will correct itself.

Also, and much more troublesome, is that if I try to kill the X server with
ctrl+alt+backspace or when I log out of X, the server will usually spontaneously
reboot.

I do however see my text on my tty1 just fine.

Comment 9 Andrew Case 2007-11-05 19:36:40 UTC
My setup:

Model: Dell Optiplex 745
Video: Intel 82Q963/Q965
OS: RHEL5
Affected Kernels: 2.6.18-8, 2.6.18-8.1.8.el5, 2.6.18-8.1.14.el5, 2.6.18-8.1.15.el5
i810 affected: xorg-x11-drv-i810-1.6.5.-9.5.el5, xorg-x11-drv-i810-1.6.5.-9.2.el5
X version: xorg-x11-server-Xorg-1.1.1-48.13.0.1.el5

Comment 10 Andrew Case 2007-11-05 19:43:20 UTC
I should have written....

When the X server is killed the SYSTEM will usually spontaneously reboot (not
the expected result of the X server restarting).

Also, this isn't a proper shutdown/reboot, but an immediate drop back to the the
bios, no unmounting or process terminations along the way. As if someone had
hit a "reset" button.

Comment 11 Andrew Case 2007-11-05 22:18:01 UTC
It looks like this is actually a kernel panic that occurs when the X server
terminated. I'll try to attach the core file.

The pulsating color is present if I use the generic vesa driver instead. The
vesa driver does not seem to cause the system kernel to panic like the i810
driver does though.

Comment 13 Thorsten Scherf 2008-05-26 13:09:10 UTC
any updates on this?

I still have the same problems running RHEL5.1 with following packages:

xorg-x11-drv-i810-1.6.5-9.13.el5.i386.rpm
kernel-2.6.18-53.el5

Comment 14 Brian Likosar 2008-10-17 20:41:03 UTC
Same problem for Dell Studio Hybrid (RHEL 5.2 with some errata updates). Relevant info:

kernel-2.6.18-115.el5.r8169.1

Please test with the current 5.4 snapshot, as several fixes have been integrated relevant to VT switching.

It is just me or is this problem reoccurring on a newly updated RH5.4?
