Restart fails from GNOME after switching user. Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1. Log in as User A. 2. Use Switch User. 3. Log in as User B. 4. Switch back to User A. 5. Open GNOME system menu and select Restart. 6. GNOME warns that another user is logged in. 7. Click Restart. Actual Results: If I login as the first user, then login to the second user. Start creating a new doc and leave it open. Switch back to the first user. From the Gnome system menu select restart. I see the warning of the other user logged in. Click restart to restart anyway, nothing happens. System never restarts. Expected Results: After clicking restart the system should reboot. Additional Information: From journalctl........localhost-live gnome-session-service[1903]: Shutdown failed: GDBus.Error:org.freedesktop.login1.BlockedByInhibitorLock: Operation denied due to active block inhibitor
Yeah, I can reproduce this. The unsaved document (or something like that) on the inactive user is important: it doesn't reproduce without that. Basically something needs to have an inhibitor set on the inactive user's session, I think. It's arguable whether User A should be able to override User B's inhibitor and restart the system. (Maybe it should depend on whether either, neither or both is an admin?) But even if they should not, we should not provide a "Restart" button, or say "The system will restart automatically in X seconds", if we're not actually going to do it. This is an upstream issue, though, not Fedora-specific. Will file there.
The issue persists with F45 Branched. Build 20260817.
Proposed as a Blocker for 45-beta by Fedora user derekenz using the blocker tracking app because: When User B has an unsaved document open, restarting from User A consistently fails. GNOME allows the restart to be confirmed, but nothing happens due to an active shutdown inhibitor from User B's session. This is reproducible on Fedora 45 Branched.
AGREED RejectedBetaBlocker AcceptedBetaBlocker Discussed at the 2026-08-24 (blocker / freeze exception) review meeting: This is rejected for Beta as it does not violate the Beta criteria, the user switching criterion is for Final. It's accepted for Final as a conditional violation of "User switching must work using the mechanisms offered (if any) by all release-blocking desktops in their default configuration" - we consider not correctly informing user A of an inhibitor relating to user B to be a sufficient violation of the "must work" requirement. https://meetbot-raw.fedoraproject.org//blocker-review_matrix_fedoraproject-org/2026-08-24/f45-blocker-review.2026-08-24-15.59.log.txt
Of course the line above should have said AcceptedFinalBlocker
