Description Łukasz Posadowski 2026-07-19 06:03:20 UTC
1. Please describe the problem:
I'm using Fedora 44 on a old laptop with
00:01.0 VGA compatible controller: Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. [AMD/ATI] Kabini [Radeon HD 8210]
graphics. Since kernel 7.1, it can't switch to a high resolution during boot. Until Kernel 7.1, this was done just prior to a LUKS prompt for encrypted block devices.

2. What is the Version-Release number of the kernel:
rpm -qa | grep -i 'kernel' | sort
abrt-addon-kerneloops-2.17.8-3.fc44.x86_64

3. Did it work previously in Fedora? If so, what kernel version did the issue
*first* appear? Old kernels are available for download at
   https://koji.fedoraproject.org/koji/packageinfo?packageID=8 :

Yes.

4. Can you reproduce this issue? If so, please provide the steps to reproduce
   the issue below:
That's only possible on an old integrated AMD GPU.

5. Does this problem occur with the latest Rawhide kernel? To install the
Rawhide kernel, run ``sudo dnf install fedora-repos-rawhide`` followed by
   ``sudo dnf update --enablerepo=rawhide kernel``:
I don't know.

6. Are you running any modules that not shipped with directly Fedora's kernel?:
No.

7. Please attach the kernel logs. You can get the complete kernel log
   for a boot with ``journalctl --no-hostname -k > dmesg.txt``. If the
issue occurred on a previous boot, use the journalctl ``-b`` flag.

Below are two boot attempts. First is from Kernel 7.1 and second from 7.0. The bug is around
Fatal error during GPU init
line.

Reproducible: Always

Comment 1 Łukasz Posadowski 2026-09-20 12:04:55 UTC
It is totally working fine on Fedora 45 and kernels

$ rpm -qa | grep -i 'kernel' | grep '45'
kernel-srpm-macros-1.0-30.fc45.noarch
kernel-core-7.2.5-300.fc45.x86_64
kernel-modules-core-7.2.5-300.fc45.x86_64
kernel-modules-7.2.5-300.fc45.x86_64
kernel-modules-extra-7.2.5-300.fc45.x86_64
libreport-plugin-kerneloops-2.17.15-13.fc45.x86_64
abrt-addon-kerneloops-2.17.9-1.fc45.x86_64
kernel-7.2.5-300.fc45.x86_64
kernel-core-7.2.6-300.fc45.x86_64
kernel-modules-core-7.2.6-300.fc45.x86_64
kernel-modules-7.2.6-300.fc45.x86_64
kernel-modules-extra-7.2.6-300.fc45.x86_64
kernel-7.2.6-300.fc45.x86_64

For me it is totally OK to close the issue, if Fedora 44 will get kernel 7.2. Otherwise, I suggest upgrade to Fedora 45.

Whoever wrote the code to fix that, thanks!
