When starting the installer workflow in Fedora-Silverblue-Installer-45-20260928.n.0.x86_64, with network connection available, in Australia, 'English (Australia)' is selected by default (correct), however the keyboard selection 'au' is marked with the following error, preventing continuation until the language or keyboard selection is changed: "No valid VConsole keymap can be obtained for the selected keyboard layout(s). Please make a different keyboard layout selection." After reviewing other languages, I observed the following exhibit the same symptom: - Sesotho sa Leboa (Afrika Borwa) Reproducible: Always Steps to Reproduce: 1.Start Fedora installation for Fedora-Silverblue-Installer-45-20260928.n.0.x86_64 2.On welcome screen, select language 'English (Australia)' 3.Observe error message displayed. Actual Results: "No valid VConsole keymap can be obtained for the selected keyboard layout(s). Please make a different keyboard layout selection." Expected Results: No error, ability to click next and continue.
Here's what happens: 1. User / Geolocation selects "English (Australia)" (locale en_AU) 2. langtable returns au as the preferred keyboard layout - anaconda sets x_layouts = ["au"] 3. vc_keymap is empty, so anaconda calls _resolve_missing_by_conversion → localed_wrapper.convert_layouts(["au"]) 4. This calls systemd-localed which looks up au in kbd-model-map - no entry found - returns "" 5. plannedVconsole === "" - the webui shows the error and blocks continuation This was exposed by commit 686181eb85 [1] ("fix: Use full locale for keyboard layout selection") which changed set_x_keyboard_defaults() to query langtable with the full locale (en_AU.UTF-8) instead of just the language ID (en). Previously, get_locale_keyboards("en") returned ['us', 'gb', 'au'], picking us as the highest-ranked layout. Now, get_locale_keyboards("en_AU.UTF-8") correctly returns the territory-specific ['au']. This change was necessary to fix the pt_PT/br keyboard mismatch (rhbz#2491211). The same issue affects other locales whose langtable-suggested X11 layout is missing from kbd-model-map. Upstream fix: https://github.com/rhinstaller/anaconda/pull/7327 @Adam do you think it would make sense to add the missing x11 keyboards in kdb-model-map? Is that mapping supposed to be complete?
Fix for kbd: https://src.fedoraproject.org/rpms/kbd/pull-request/4 I think it would still make sense for anaconda to fall back instead of failing, though, just in case there's any other way to get here.
Moving this to kbd component as the actual fix is the PR above. The team will review the fallback and decide if we want this on anaconda side as well. Thanks!
