Description:
Independent desktop client for WhatsApp Web with system tray integration, desktop notifications, themes, configurable fonts and privacy controls. It requires an existing WhatsApp account and Internet access. The project is not affiliated with Meta or WhatsApp.

The application is GPL-3.0-or-later, its WhiteSur-derived artwork GPL-3.0-only, and its AppStream metadata CC0-1.0. Artwork sources and license notices are included in the source archive.

This source-only application proposal installs JavaScript and data and depends on a distribution-owned Electron >= 40, < 41 runtime. It neither downloads Electron nor runs npm during the build. The application package and tests pass in a clean Fedora 44 environment, with zero rpmlint errors or warnings.

Runtime prerequisite:
Electron is not currently packaged in the target Fedora repositories. This proposal does not complete Electron's source build, dependency packaging or security maintenance and cannot currently be installed from the official archives. I seek guidance on the runtime prerequisite and the eligibility of this independent client; final review/acceptance must wait for these matters.

I am a new Fedora contributor and need a package-maintainer sponsor (FE-NEEDSPONSOR).

Comment 1 abdallah-shehawy 2026-10-09 21:22:31 UTC
Updated Fedora review artifacts following the devel feedback (RPM revision 2).

Correction: Fedora Rawhide already provides nodejs-electron-43.2.0-1.fc46. My initial assessment was incomplete: I checked stable Fedora and missed the Rawhide package. The revised Fedora SPEC requires Electron >=43,<44, matches the actual native WM_CLASS and hardlinks duplicate icon/metadata files. It remains a source-only application package; it neither downloads Electron nor runs npm during the build.

Implementation:

Validation: application 1.9.12 was tested in a private Rawhide container with Fedora's official nodejs-electron-43.2.0-1.fc46. The source RPM rebuilt, the application RPM installed, application tests and source-only installation checks passed, and rpmlint reported zero errors and warnings.

The installed application's real logged-out WhatsApp QR page, Settings, Fonts and About rendered; preloads/IPC worked; private settings writes were read back; and the native WM_CLASS matched the installed desktop entry. This was a basic compatibility check using X11 with GPU disabled. Signed-in messaging/calls, native Wayland and hardware acceleration remain unvalidated. Later Electron major versions will need fresh compatibility validation as Fedora moves forward.

The Fedora devel follow-up has been sent in the original proposal thread:
https://lists.fedoraproject.org/archives/list/devel@lists.fedoraproject.org/thread/2L7VRATKFL4CDYQWCE5GXZHEFLLAG62P/

I would appreciate application review and packager sponsorship guidance. Sponsorship request:
https://forge.fedoraproject.org/packaging/sponsors/issues/802

Rawhide runtime availability does not establish availability on stable Fedora or Debian/Ubuntu. Debian's separate Electron prerequisite remains unresolved. These application checks and this submission are not archive acceptance. The normal stable application remains 1.9.12 with bundled Electron 40.
