Github linux-credentials oo7 pull 580 0 None Merged client: Stop checking secret length 2026-10-26 22:28:29 UTC

Description Adrien D 2026-10-25 09:47:37 UTC
After migration from 44 to 45 (but same issue with clean install).

After setup my email in evolution, my password asked twice : (for IMAP and SMTP)
I checked “add this password to your keyring” but it’s not working;, the password asmed me at each startup.

No logs in journalctl.
When starting evolution from command line, i only have :
(org.gnome.Evolution:621495): e-data-server-ui-WARNING **: 23:43:07.966: credentials_prompter_store_credentials_cb: Failed to store source credentials: org.freedesktop.DBus.Error.Failed: Failed to create a new item Password too short: 1.

(org.gnome.Evolution:621495): e-data-server-ui-WARNING **: 23:43:10.384: credentials_prompter_store_credentials_cb: Failed to store source credentials: org.freedesktop.DBus.Error.Failed: Failed to create a new item Password too short: 1.

Reproducible: Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1. Install Evolution mail client
2. Setup a basic IMAP/SMTP email address
3. Type the password and check add this password to your keyring
4. Close Evolution
5. Open Evolution again and see the password asked again
Actual Results:
Password asked at each startup

Expected Results:
Password shouldn't asked

Comment 2 validationform 2026-10-25 14:09:01 UTC
I briefly reviewed the oo7 commits/pull requests. The only other issues that are already fixed in oo7 main that I could see us getting bug reports for:

(zbus method name translation fix for elogind/logind) oo7-daemon fails to resolve the login session through elogind/logind on every startup. https://github.com/linux-credentials/oo7/pull/606
https://github.com/linux-credentials/oo7/pull/606/changes/4c0190cd9c4ef881cbaed3a1f70a6f231e2a9965

(race condition on initialization) daemon claims org.freedesktop.secrets before it is fully initialized and able to handle requests, an application on startup may never receive a reply and will timeout or freeze. https://github.com/linux-credentials/oo7/issues/581
https://github.com/linux-credentials/oo7/pull/594/changes/2a7f45f41a355c0181687e6f35cb4db50efc620e

(race condition on startup) login keyring may remain locked, requiring you to manually enter your passwords each time. https://github.com/linux-credentials/oo7/pull/615
https://github.com/linux-credentials/oo7/pull/615/changes/7257cdfd8aa5c194348ae40bc695e6f9e7abafc0
similar: https://github.com/linux-credentials/oo7/commit/b54f8e7cec0700366d3be86170053c014e97a576

(migration) oo7 doesn't recognize the gnome keyring format with its password removed (unencrypted). https://github.com/linux-credentials/oo7/issues/572
https://github.com/linux-credentials/oo7/commit/b236c6fbd11866ea1106e83c2dd14580933299dc
https://github.com/linux-credentials/oo7/commit/78bb59f229ba5a1331f0a68ad461d18c4795b781

It will be nice when 0.7.0 releases.

Comment 3 validationform 2026-10-26 03:54:18 UTC
The one I accidentally listed as "similar" above in my notes was the same commit, after being rebased to latest and committed to the main branch by the maintainer (7257cdf -> b54f8e7).

Comment 4 Fedora Blocker Bugs Application 2026-10-26 14:27:17 UTC
Proposed as a Blocker for 45-final by Fedora user augenauf using the blocker tracking app because:

 violated criteria:

Saving passwords to and retrieving passwords from the default keyring must work for all release-blocking desktops.

Comment 5 Adam Williamson (Fedora) 2026-10-26 16:16:33 UTC
So...poking at the relevant code, it seems like you'd only get this error for a password shorter than four characters?

I agree it's not oo7's job to police that, but still, er...your mail password should not be less than four characters 😅

Comment 6 Michael Catanzaro 2026-10-26 16:20:38 UTC
Bilal will create a new release soon, probably later this week.

Comment 7 Adam Williamson (Fedora) 2026-10-26 16:40:17 UTC
I'm planning to backport just the < 4 character fix after the meeting (we accepted this as an FE). that one seems pretty clearcut and safe. I don't think we want to pull an entire new release in this late.

Comment 8 Lukas Ruzicka (Red Hat) 2026-10-26 16:53:31 UTC
AGREED RejectedFinalBlocker AcceptedFinalFreezeException

Discussed at the 2026-10-26 (blocker / freeze exception) review meeting:

Our best read on this issue at the moment is that oo7 rejects passwords shorter than four characters. This is a conditional violation of “Saving passwords to and retrieving passwords from the default keyring must work for all release-blocking desktops” in the case of very short passwords, but we think (hope?) it should not be encountered very often. We therefore do not think it reaches the blocker threshold, but we are OK with backporting the fix as an FE.

My password is 12 characters and i have some "one app password" with 16 characters

Comment 10 Adam Williamson (Fedora) 2026-10-26 17:51:49 UTC
Hmm, that's interesting. Don't see why it would trigger the check, then. I'm going to backport that fix shortly, I'd be curious to know if it solves the problem for you. If so possibly the check itself had a non-obvious bug, although that'd only be of academic interest at that point.

Comment 11 Adam Williamson (Fedora) 2026-10-26 22:28:10 UTC
I did a scratch build with a minimal backport of the fix: https://koji.fedoraproject.org/koji/taskinfo?taskID=151701613

Adrien, are you around to check if it works for you?

Comment 12 Adrien D 2026-10-26 23:10:01 UTC
OK
Just installed and reboot the Fedora 45 :
adrien@192-168-21-158:~$ rpm -qa | grep oo7
oo7-daemon-0.7.0~beta-4.fc45.x86_64
oo7-portal-0.7.0~beta-4.fc45.x86_64
pam_oo7-0.7.0~beta-4.fc45.x86_64

Starting evolution :
adrien@192-168-21-158:~$ evolution
MESA-EGL: warning: failed to get driver name for fd -1
MESA-EGL: warning: MESA-LOADER: failed to retrieve device information
MESA-EGL: warning: failed to get driver name for fd -1
MESA: error: ZINK: failed to choose pdev
MESA-EGL: warning: egl: failed to create dri2 screen

(org.gnome.Evolution:3974): Gdk-WARNING **: 00:07:17.801: Tried to unmap the parent of a popup

I setup my password twice (for IMAP and SMTP)

Restart the Evolution, no password asked.
It's OK.

Reboot Fedora 45 :
Start evolution : no password asked.

So the fix is the fix !

Comment 13 Adrien D 2026-10-26 23:13:59 UTC
Note : it fixes the GMail integration in online accounts

Comment 14 Adam Williamson (Fedora) 2026-10-27 00:32:37 UTC
OK, great. Weirdly I couldn't reproduce the bug; I did a fresh F45 install, installed Evolution, and gave it a bogus username and password for a real server (Fastmail IMAP). I made the password just '4'...and I don't have any "Password too short" log messages and the password shows up in Seahorse.

So there's something else weird going on here, but hey, if it works for you, it works for you. I'll do an official build. Thanks for the feedback.

FEDORA-2026-fd58111611 (oo7-0.7.0~beta-4.fc45) has been submitted as an update to Fedora 45.
https://bodhi.fedoraproject.org/updates/FEDORA-2026-fd58111611

Comment 16 Adam Williamson (Fedora) 2026-10-27 21:34:58 UTC
There's a scratch build of a git snapshot at https://koji.fedoraproject.org/koji/taskinfo?taskID=151720449 , as other proposed blockers/FEs emerged in oo7 and there's a sense that a snapshot build might be better than more and more backports. Please test it and see if it also fixes this bug, and if you notice any other problems with it. Thanks.

Comment 18 Adrien D 2026-10-28 14:52:49 UTC
Just remember now : my email password is more than 4 characters BUT my session password is only 1 character.

Maybe it's because my account linux password is less than 4 characters !!!
When i test some things i only use 1 character (first letter of the account name) because i create lot of accounts (to tests switching sessions in graphics and more) and theses computers are nor critical

Comment 19 Adam Williamson (Fedora) 2026-10-28 15:37:25 UTC
Ah, that might be it. I didn't test with a short session password (I usually use 'test' for throwaway test installs, so it's just long enough :>)

right, it's a keyring password length being tested here, which quite often matches the user account password, aka the session password, as you call it
