Description Filip Miletic 2007-12-13 01:10:31 UTC
From Bugzilla Helper:
User-Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; U; Linux i686; mk; rv:1.8.1.10) Gecko/20071128 Fedora/2.0.0.10-2.fc8 Firefox/2.0.0.10

Description of problem:
I can not record any sounds via microphone when using pulseaudio as the sound server. Changing the microphone settings does not help. The microphone records either silence or (sometimes, 1 out of 10 cases say) records very loud static. pavumeter never shows any activity on the recording channel.

For the record, playback works fine. Also, ditching pulseaudio and recording through alsa works as expected.

using gnome-sound-properties to test sound recording gives:
Failed to construct test pipeline for 'gconfaudiosrc ! audioconvert ! audioresample ! gconfaudiosink profile=chat'

Version-Release number of selected component (if applicable):
pulseaudio-0.9.7-0.17.svn20071017.fc8

How reproducible:
Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1.Use any recording program to try recording audio. (I used KRec,also gnome-sound-properties test button)
2.Playback, and verify nothing has been saved

Actual Results:
No sound (e.g. speech) recorded

Expected Results:
Sound (e.g. speech) recorded.

Additional info:

Comment 1 Lennart Poettering 2008-03-28 20:22:54 UTC
Please play around with "alsamixer -c0" and try to get your mixer settings right
so that audio works.

Comment 2 Filip Miletic 2008-03-28 23:42:44 UTC
I played around with alsamixer a lot, until I gave up on it.

I do not seem to find a slider setting that actually makes the recording possible.

Comment 3 Sven Heller 2008-05-22 15:14:09 UTC
Same here in Fedora 9 no sound can be recorded while all devices turned on,
Soundchip is Realtek ALC662 rev1, concerns all Asus eeePC 701 and eeePC 900.
Audio-playback works very well.

Comment 4 Bug Zapper 2008-11-26 08:58:42 UTC
This message is a reminder that Fedora 8 is nearing its end of life.
Approximately 30 (thirty) days from now Fedora will stop maintaining
and issuing updates for Fedora 8. It is Fedora's policy to close all
bug reports from releases that are no longer maintained. At that time
this bug will be closed as WONTFIX if it remains open with a Fedora
'version' of '8'.

Package Maintainer: If you wish for this bug to remain open because you
plan to fix it in a currently maintained version, simply change the 'version'
to a later Fedora version prior to Fedora 8's end of life.

Bug Reporter: Thank you for reporting this issue and we are sorry that
we may not be able to fix it before Fedora 8 is end of life. If you
would still like to see this bug fixed and are able to reproduce it
against a later version of Fedora please change the 'version' of this
bug to the applicable version. If you are unable to change the version,
please add a comment here and someone will do it for you.

Although we aim to fix as many bugs as possible during every release's
lifetime, sometimes those efforts are overtaken by events. Often a
more recent Fedora release includes newer upstream software that fixes
bugs or makes them obsolete.

The process we are following is described here:
http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/BugZappers/HouseKeeping

Comment 5 Bug Zapper 2009-01-09 05:29:40 UTC
Fedora 8 changed to end-of-life (EOL) status on 2009-01-07. Fedora 8 is
no longer maintained, which means that it will not receive any further
security or bug fix updates. As a result we are closing this bug.

If you can reproduce this bug against a currently maintained version of
Fedora please feel free to reopen this bug against that version.

Thank you for reporting this bug and we are sorry it could not be fixed.

Comment 6 Filip Miletic 2009-07-10 07:57:02 UTC
Confirmed against Fedora 11 and pulseaudio 0.9.15.

Reopening.

Comment 7 Lennart Poettering 2009-07-25 11:37:09 UTC
Could you please try "alsactl init" and check if that changes something?

Please include output of "amixer -c0" here.

What driver are you using?

Comment 8 Michael Wiktowy 2009-07-28 20:10:13 UTC
Just to add my experience here. There is no sound input on *any* box that I have installed F11 on.

The only way I seem to be able to temporarily get pulseaudio to record sound input is to open up the gnome sound preference dialog. When that is open, pulseaudio magically turns on the input. When that dialog is closed, microphone input goes away again.

alsactl init and amixer -c0 output for michael.wiktowy

This is my output for one of my sound cards.

I do my testing using Mumble VoIP client in loopback testing mode and voice activations so that I get a VUMeter.

To be more clear, it seems that I get a few millisecond snippets of sound being recorded every few seconds when the Sound Preferences dialog box is not open. Things seem to work when I have the Sound Preferences dialog running (accessed in Gnome via right-click on the mixer applet)

No microphone at all. I also played with alsamixer and there's no change... I've been having the same problem with Fedora 10. Now I'm on Fedora 11...

Comment 12 Lennart Poettering 2009-09-07 22:20:49 UTC
Most likely this is a mixer initialization issue. I'd recommend fiddling around with "alsamixer -c0" to find the option to make things work. Often enough we can then fix the default in the mixer initialization database.

mumble's PA backend is racy and makes some incorrection assumptions about the buffer sizes. It's not suitable as a test tool.

Comment 13 Kamil Stawirej 2009-10-01 18:28:21 UTC
Hi!

I found this information in the Skype user forum a few days ago.
(The tip was posted by Wise Ferret.)

"After installation I tried a test call, and couldn't hear my voice. Trying again broke skype completely, and I couldn't hear incoming audio too. Moreover, skype would not shut down; I had to kill it manually.

My solution was as follows:
1. Kill pulseaudio.
2. restart pulseaudio.
3. start skype.
4. start pavucontrol. go to "Recording" tab.
5. start skype test call.
6. Now be quick! While the call goes on, in the "Recording" tab of pavucontrol -> "input from" field, choose "Internal Audio Analog Stereo" instead of "Monitor of Internal Audio Analog Stereo".
7. ...And from now on, Skype behaves."

This also worked for the Gnome Sound Recorder, so I suppose it's something this this 'monitor' thing. Anyhow, all my recording apps now actually use the microphone.

Please don't hijack bug reports. Please file seperate bug reports for seperate things. I will now ignore everything written here except from Filip.

Filip, could you please try "alsactl init -c0" as I suggested? Does that help in any way?

Comment 15 Lennart Poettering 2009-10-27 03:20:18 UTC
Also, Filip, please provide the output of alsa-info.sh --no-upload.

Comment 16 Filip Miletic 2009-10-27 05:01:53 UTC
After several months of non-use of pulseaudio due to this error, I revisited for the purpose of this bug.

I reinstalled the pulseaudio libraries:
pulseaudio-module-bluetooth-0.9.15-17.fc11.i586
alsa-plugins-pulseaudio-1.0.21-2.fc11.i586
pulseaudio-0.9.15-17.fc11.i586
wine-pulseaudio-1.1.29-1.fc11.i586
pulseaudio-libs-glib2-0.9.15-17.fc11.i586
pulseaudio-libs-zeroconf-0.9.15-17.fc11.i586
pulseaudio-module-gconf-0.9.15-17.fc11.i586
pulseaudio-utils-0.9.15-17.fc11.i586
pulseaudio-esound-compat-0.9.15-17.fc11.i586
pulseaudio-module-x11-0.9.15-17.fc11.i586
pulseaudio-libs-0.9.15-17.fc11.i586

I restarted pulseaudio and lo and behold --- it now works out of the box. This is a huge change over the past few tries, where I could get no sound recorded whatsoever. pavumeter shows jumping bars when I talk and I can record sound normally. It is at this moment very difficult for me to say what had changed in the meantime.

As for what you requested, 'alsactl init -c0' only prints usage with a note:
alsactl: invalid option -- 'c'.

alsa-info.sh --no-upload gives:
