Check that you have haldaemon running, that the CD drive appears in lshal and that you have permissions on the device node.

Is this the CDROM drive? udi = '/org/freedesktop/Hal/devices/pci_8086_24db_ide_1_0' info.udi = '/org/freedesktop/Hal/devices/pci_8086_24db_ide_1_0' (string) linux.subsystem = 'ide' (string) linux.hotplug_type = 1 (0x1) (int) info.product = 'IDE device (master)' (string) ide.channel = 0 (0x0) (int) ide.host = 1 (0x1) (int) info.linux.driver = 'ide-cdrom' (string) info.parent = '/org/freedesktop/Hal/devices/pci_8086_24db' (string) info.bus = 'ide' (string) linux.sysfs_path_device = '/sys/devices/pci0000:00/0000:00:1f.1/ide1/1.0' (string) linux.sysfs_path = '/sys/devices/pci0000:00/0000:00:1f.1/ide1/1.0' (string)

How do I make this information appear for my DVD drive? I never had any problem with my old drive, but I had to replace it because it couldn't write 16x media.
