Description of problem: gdmgreeter wakes up many times a second. Not a good idea. Version-Release number of selected component (if applicable): gdm-2.20.2-2.fc8 How reproducible: Every time. Steps to Reproduce: 1. start machine 2. log in remotely from another machine 3. strace -p PID_OF_GDMGREETER Actual results: Many system calls each second, like this: poll([{fd=3, events=POLLIN}, {fd=4, events=POLLIN}, {fd=10, events=POLLIN|POLLPRI}, {fd=14, events=POLLIN|POLLPRI}, {fd=0, events=POLLIN|POLLPRI}, {fd=16, events=POLLIN}], 6, 799) = 0 gettimeofday({1199415139, 524159}, NULL) = 0 gettimeofday({1199415139, 524515}, NULL) = 0 read(3, 0x88a52d8, 4096) = -1 EAGAIN (Resource temporarily unavailable) read(16, 0x9091eb8, 4096) = -1 EAGAIN (Resource temporarily unavailable) gettimeofday({1199415139, 524737}, NULL) = 0 poll([{fd=3, events=POLLIN}, {fd=4, events=POLLIN}, {fd=10, events=POLLIN|POLLPRI}, {fd=14, events=POLLIN|POLLPRI}, {fd=0, events=POLLIN|POLLPRI}, {fd=16, events=POLLIN}], 6, 0) = 0 select(4, [3], [3], NULL, NULL) = 1 (out [3]) writev(3, [{"5\30\4\0w\r@\0\244\0@\0\t\1\24\0\233\4\5\0x\r@\0w\r@\0008\0\0\0"..., 220}], 1) = 220 read(3, 0x88a52d8, 4096) = -1 EAGAIN (Resource temporarily unavailable) read(3, 0x88a52d8, 4096) = -1 EAGAIN (Resource temporarily unavailable) read(16, 0x9091eb8, 4096) = -1 EAGAIN (Resource temporarily unavailable) Expected results: It should not wake up so often. Wakeups are bad for power management.
Ray fixed one source of frequent wakeups in the greeter. Can you check if it is still waking up too frequently for you ?
(In reply to comment #1) > Ray fixed one source of frequent wakeups in the greeter. > Can you check if it is still waking up too frequently for you ? You did not specify what version to test, so I just used the latest from F8: gdm-2.20.3-1.fc8 There was no visible difference, there still are a lot of wakeups. To test: login remotely to the machine, $ strace -p `pidof gdmgreeter` and see the activity.
This message is a reminder that Fedora 8 is nearing its end of life. Approximately 30 (thirty) days from now Fedora will stop maintaining and issuing updates for Fedora 8. It is Fedora's policy to close all bug reports from releases that are no longer maintained. At that time this bug will be closed as WONTFIX if it remains open with a Fedora 'version' of '8'. Package Maintainer: If you wish for this bug to remain open because you plan to fix it in a currently maintained version, simply change the 'version' to a later Fedora version prior to Fedora 8's end of life. Bug Reporter: Thank you for reporting this issue and we are sorry that we may not be able to fix it before Fedora 8 is end of life. If you would still like to see this bug fixed and are able to reproduce it against a later version of Fedora please change the 'version' of this bug to the applicable version. If you are unable to change the version, please add a comment here and someone will do it for you. Although we aim to fix as many bugs as possible during every release's lifetime, sometimes those efforts are overtaken by events. Often a more recent Fedora release includes newer upstream software that fixes bugs or makes them obsolete. The process we are following is described here: http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/BugZappers/HouseKeeping
Fedora 8 changed to end-of-life (EOL) status on 2009-01-07. Fedora 8 is no longer maintained, which means that it will not receive any further security or bug fix updates. As a result we are closing this bug. If you can reproduce this bug against a currently maintained version of Fedora please feel free to reopen this bug against that version. Thank you for reporting this bug and we are sorry it could not be fixed.
