Description Alan Matsuoka 2008-02-11 17:34:03 UTC
Description of problem:

Tested driver version:
xorg-x11-drv-i810-1.6.5-9.6.0.2.el5

Laptop panel was closed, external Display is black.
It is a 18.1" Display that can do 1280 x 1024

LVM is planning to deploy 7.000 laptops which are going to use external monitors
attached via VGA or DVI. They have begun their testing using the latest "intel"
driver which now supports enabling the external video at runtime via the Fn+F7
function key.

They are trying different combinations of laptops (Esprimo and T61) and
monitors, with different results depending on whether the laptop's lid was
opened or closed.

In this IT, they have attached all the relevant logs and results of testing with
a "LG 1800P 202KG" monitor:

T61 VGA lid open: sometimes external display black :
monitortest-2008-02-07-093730.tgz

T61 DVI lid closed: GDM login not possible (User can login but the session
terminates immediatly! monitortest-2008-02-07-105440.tgz

T61 DVI lid open: sometimes external display black + GDM login not possible.
monitortest-2008-02-07-103005.tgz

Esprimo VGA: All OK monitortest-2008-02-05-152123.tgz

T61 VGA lid closed: All OK monitortest-2008-02-07-094941.tgz

T61 VGA lid open: sometimes external display black :
monitortest-2008-02-07-093730.tgz

T61 DVI lid closed: GDM login not possible (User can login but the session
terminates immediatly! monitortest-2008-02-07-105440.tgz

T61 DVI lid open: sometimes external display black + GDM login not possible.

Hans-Gerd,

can you please download the read-edid utility which we have used in the past from:

 http://ape.n3.net/programs/linux/read-edid

Compile it and then run:

 ./get-edid | ./parse-edid | tee t61.txt

Attaching the output here.

Xorg.0.log

The same display does also not work on our FujitsuSiemens Esprimo Desktop
Hardware. I have attached the Xorg.0.log from that maschine too.

The effect is in this situation a bit different. We get a picture but a wrong
resolution: 1280x768

X.org log for dvi

An other update to this issue:

Tested the T61 again but using a dvi cable results in a wrong resolution:
1152x864.

Comment 5 Adam Jackson 2008-02-14 20:29:07 UTC
Please add the line

    Option "ModeDebug" "on"

to the Device section of /etc/X11/xorg.conf when running these testcases. This
will emit additional information about monitor capabilities and mode validation
into the X log, which should give me a better idea about what's going wrong with
output setup.
