Description of problem: On vanilla installation the laptop powers off as it tries to run the 1st boot stuff. with acpi=off the screen will blank randomly and when trying to apply the outstanding updates the laptop will eventually power off. All desktop management has been set to never, screensaver to 78 minutes.
