Description Chris Schembari 2008-05-14 00:11:12 UTC
Description of problem:
BlobAndConquer uses some graphics that require hardware-accelerated 3D
functions, not in playing the game itself, but in some ancillary items both
useful and decorative.
I would like to see Parallel Realities change the game so that these 3D
items are optional only, just like the blood-and-gore setting, so that
X-generated 2D variations can be used instead and users [Linux newbies, in
particular] can get the full game experience without having the foresight [or,
rather, clairvoyance!] to specify a modern Intel or Nvidia graphics
card/chipset when he tries out Linux on an already-bought/built PC.

Version-Release number of selected component: BlobAndConquer 0.91

Additional info:
The attached screenshots were taken on my newly-assembled box with an Nvidia
IGP and Nvidia's proprietary drivers, installed through the Livna non-free
repository.
When I refer to my experience with a graphics chipset that doesn't support
these graphics, I'm talking about my first homebrew box, which has a VIA
UniChrome/KM400 IGP.

Chris,

Thanks for your interest in blobAndConquer and thanks for the between-mission
text boxes text (I'll look into that later).

First of all the showing of white boxes instead of the correct 2D images when
not using hw accelerated OpenGL is not a blobAndConquer bug, but rather a bug of
the software OpenGL renderer used then: mesa, so please file a bug against mesa.

Although afaik there is some accel going on on the via chipsets you mention, so
its most likely a bug in the 3d code for the via, but thats part of mesa too, so
still file a bug against mesa.

Secondly, I wonder is blobAndConquer usable at all on systems without hw accel
3D / on the via system?

Currently when launched from the menu blobAndConquer-wrapper gets launched which
will first check if your OpenGL is dri (hw accel) capable, and if it is not it
will throw an error box instead of starting blobAndconquer, this is done because
in general OpenGL games are completely unusable when run without hw accel.

Closing this as not a bug, as it is not a (blobAndConquer) bug.
