valgrind output

Description of problem:
I've recently updated to rawhide and my xfce begun to crash - it crashes so often that it makes it unusable. It stats with panel then xfdesktop. Even applications (e.g. pidgin) crash a lot when run under xfce - this doesn't happen in GNOME so i guess it's connected to xfce. This happens on system updated from F9 to rawhide - I tried this with fresh install and it works fine. According to attached valgrind log there is a lot of invalid reads in some gtk_ g_ function - I'm not very familiar with gtk, so I can't tell if it's xfce fault or gtk.

Version-Release number of selected component (if applicable):
xfce4-panel-4.4.2-5.fc10.i386
xfdesktop-4.4.2-6.fc10.i386

How reproducible:
100%

Steps to Reproduce:
1. update from F9 to rawhide
2. run xfce
3. try to use it..

Actual results:
after a while it crashes

Expected results:
not to crash :)

I just managed to crash xfce even on freshly install rawhide (just closed some window and everything disappeared) - so it crashes even on clean install (but much less).

Can you please be a little more precise? What crashed - xfce4-panel or xfdesktop?

Can you try downgrading to xfce4-panel-4.4.2-4.fc10 to see if it panel related? We had a couple of changes in xfdesktop recently, so I want to check the panel first.

Comment 3 Jiri Moskovcak 2008-10-07 12:04:11 UTC
In my comment #1 everything crashed - I ended up with wallpaper and pointer. But on the other computer (F9->rawhide updated one) sometimes xfdesktop crashes firtst, sometimes xfce4-panel sometimes everything together. If there is smth I can do to determine which one is causing, let me know and I'll try.

Ok then, but what exactly means "crashed" in this case? When you switch to a vt and do a ps -A there, are there any Xfce components left? Are the programs you started gone too?

Please downgrade the panel on this machine as I told you in comment #2. If Xfce is still crashing it's xfdesktop.

Comment 5 Jiri Moskovcak 2008-10-07 14:00:21 UTC
Downgraded to xfce4-panel-4.4.2-4.fc9.i386 and nothing changed - while I was trying to get my favourite plugins to panel (I lost the config when it crashed last time :() it has crashed again and xfdesktop crashed just a second later when I tried right-click on desktop. ps told me that following parts of xfce survived:

xfce-mcs-manager
xfrun4
xfwm4

All running apps survived this crash also. Now I'm trying to crash to freshly installed system - but it seems to be ok so far..

Is this rawhide? or f9?

Is there anything in ~/.xsession-errors when it crashes?
Is there anything in /var/log/Xorg.0.log when it crashes?

Comment 7 Christoph Wickert 2008-10-08 17:09:00 UTC
Kevin, in comment #1 Jiri says it Rawhide. I wonder if this is related to the xdg-user-dir patches in there...

Jiri: Ok then, please try downgrading to the previous version of xfdesktop.

Comment 9 Jiri Moskovcak 2008-10-09 10:41:48 UTC
Ok guy, I've downgraded to

xfdesktop-4.4.2-3.fc9.i386
xfce4-panel-4.4.2-4.fc9.i386

and the same thing happened. First xfdesktop crashed and few clicks (and one alt-tab) later xfwm4 and xfce4-panel followed. Now the weird thing - as I hate metacity I tried to run xfwm4 in gnome and it didn't crash and right now I'm running xfdesktop under gnome and it seems stable also..

Comments #8 and #10 belongs to session I was talking about in #9 :)

Comment 12 Jiri Moskovcak 2008-10-09 12:23:46 UTC
I tried to boot to init 3 and then started xfce with $ starxfce4 command and so far it runs ok (about 15mins) any ideas?

Comment 13 Kevin Fenzi 2008-10-09 19:13:08 UTC
Quite strange.

So, when did this behavior start? Can you pinpoint any other updates done just before it started being unstable? I guess you just updated to rawhide, so haven't been using it with rawhide packages for long?

I guess next I would suggest:

- debuginfo-install xfwm4 xfdesktop
- Login as normal to Xfce.
- gdb attach to the xfwm4 and xfdesktop processes.
- do some clicks or the like and get it to crash.
- Get a backtrace of where it died

I don't see any other hints in the xsession-errors or Xorg.0.log. ;(

Comment 14 Jiri Moskovcak 2008-10-10 08:30:00 UTC
It started right after I updated to rawhide, so it's hard to say which specific update broke it. I'll try to run it in gdb asap.

Comment 15 Jiri Moskovcak 2008-11-22 16:14:36 UTC
Hi,
today I tried to run XFCE from GDM and it seems stable again. As I said I'm not sure which package to blame so I think we can close this bug.

Thank you for your time,
Jirka
