Description John Griffiths 2008-11-10 20:29:52 UTC
I installed Fedora 9 recently. I thought I had waited long enough for the majority of bugs to be squashed. Fedora 9 installs KDE4 by default.

Sorry. I do not mean to offend, but without feedback how will you know. I think KDE4 is a large step backward from KDE3.

   1. I found that the new menu structure was cumbersome and configured to use the old menu style. The new menu style treats users like complete idiots.
   2. Many of the icons cannot be changed. Some files like a doc file from Microsoft comes up with a ? icon. I select the file and properties and the wrench icon to edit and then try to select the icon and nothing happens. And this behavior is inconsistent; some file icons can be changed.
   3. The Desktop is not the Desktop but a directory view on the real desktop. That is OK, and I can see where that might be useful, but there are some real problems. I rearrange the icons. If I add a new icon, they all realign by some algorithm that I can find no place to change. There is not a option to align to the grid; that only happens if you add or delete and icon.
   4. The Taskbar does not allow the adding of Applications like KDE3 did. A user can only add Widgets. KDE3 allowed a user to drag an application icon on to the Taskbar.
   5. The Taskbar does not allow for self-allocation of areas for use by the widgets and task windows like the KDE3 taskbar did. And the algorithm for allocation of space is not very good. I added the simple digital clock and configured it to show the seconds, date, year. The Taskbar cuts off some of the text. If the Taskbar is configured and the height changed, the space is reallocated correctly, but on the next startup, the space is wrong again.
   6. The digital clock that was on KDE3 allowed for selecting multiple timezones. The one that is currently in KDE4 does not. You get one and only one timezone. In this world, one often needs to see the time in various time zones and the pop up in the KDE3 clock was very useful for that.
   7. Korganizer reminder daemon will not start at login even though it is configured to do so.

Thanks for the feedback, but bugzilla simply is not the forum for that. Feel free to use any of these to continue a dialog if you choose:
http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Communicate
mailing list or irc (freenode, #fedora-kde) discussion is welcome.

Of the items listed, at least 7 is or could-be a genuine bug. Personally, I've never seen that, it always "just worked". (Keep in mind that kdepim used in F-9 is the kde3 version, the same that you're advocating to be used here).

The rest, are regressions of functionality, yes.

Comment 2 Rex Dieter 2008-11-10 20:39:09 UTC
Oh forgot,
rpm -q kdebase-workspace kdepim
please.

Comment 3 John Griffiths 2008-11-10 21:17:14 UTC
Did not mean to spam Bugzilla.

I do know that the kdepim used in F-9 is the kde3 since kdebase3-pim-ioslaves was a dependency.

Here is the output of rpm -q kdebase-workspace kdepim:

kdebase-workspace-4.1.2-10.fc9.i386
kdepim-3.5.10-2.fc9.i386

I'll answer your questions anyway:
ad 1. Switching to the classic menu is 2 clicks. I agree with you that the new Kickoff menu sucks, but (even if you won't believe it) some people actually like it. It was a tough decision, but at the end the vote was 3 to 2 maintainers for keeping Kickoff as the default (and yes, I voted for the classic menu).
ad 2. You have to select an icon theme which is compatible with KDE 4. I suggest setting your icon theme to Fedora-KDE (which is Oxygen + the Fedora logo for the menu button). KDE 3 icon themes won't work properly in KDE 4 because KDE 4 uses the freedesktop.org icon-naming-spec whereas KDE 3 had its own naming conventions.
ad 3. The icon rearrangement will be lost when you log out anyway. This will be better in KDE 4.2 (where you will also be able to choose the desktop folder viewer as your entire desktop).
ad 4. Simply drag&drop the applications from the classic menu to the panel. (Or use right-click and Add to panel in the Kickoff menu.)
ad 5. The clock layout problem is probably the clock applet's fault, it seems not to request a sufficient minimum size during the initial layout (and only when showing the date - it might be computing the size for the time only). There should probably be a separate bug report about this. (Bugzilla entries should be one report per issue - but of course only for actual bugs.) I can take care of the filing there, I have seen this too. There may also already be a report about this upstream at bugs.kde.org.
ad 6. You can add multiple clock applets.

Comment 5 Kevin Kofler 2008-11-10 23:34:38 UTC
Possibly related upstream reports for point 5.:
https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=173478 (but it's with the fuzzy clock and the date gets cut off only at the end, so it's not exactly what we're seeing)
https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=168340 (more like it, but the report is about city names, not dates)
Maybe also this one: https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=163870 (but it's only about fuzzy and binary clock and only in tall panels).
It's only a minor display glitch in any case.

Let's concentrate on the KOrganizer issue in this bug report, if you really want one for the clock issue, please file a separate report for it.

Comment 6 John Griffiths 2008-11-11 17:34:21 UTC
Kevin,
Thank you.

ad 2. I will file another bug report. I am using Fedora-KDE.

This tip should be in the KDE documentation which is where I looked first before filing this report.

ad 4. Simply drag&drop the applications from the classic menu to
the panel.(Or use right-click and Add to panel in the Kickoff menu.)

I had tried dragging an icon from the desktop to the taskbar and that did not work.

ad 6. This is a loss of functionality. The digital clock in KDE3 would allow multiple time zones and when the mouse was hovered over it, it would bring up a panel with all the selected time zones and the time. Since I have family and contacts all over, that was nice. I'll file a enhancement request.

Comment 7 John Griffiths 2008-11-30 16:10:41 UTC
Korganizer reminder daemon starts at login on Fedora 10, so this bug could be closed as far as I am concerned.

Comment 8 Kevin Kofler 2008-11-30 19:25:06 UTC
No. This still affects Fedora 9, so it must stay open until it is fixed in Fedora 9 or Fedora 9 goes EOL (which won't be for another 6-7 months).

Comment 9 Steven M. Parrish 2009-02-06 16:23:17 UTC
Since even with 4.2 this wont be fixed as I believe we are not pushing the new KDEPim to F9. As such we should be able to close this as WONTFIX.

Comment 10 Steven M. Parrish 2009-06-07 23:33:06 UTC
Since F9 is about to go EOL going to close this as WONTFIX.
