New kernel options can now be added using the IPL command without modifying the content of the CMS parmfile, allowing for temporary overwriting of kernel options that are already provided by the parmfile. the entire boot command line can be replaced with the VM parameter string, bypassing any kernel options from the parmfile. Furthermore, customers can create new Linux Named Saved Systems (NSS) on the CP/CMS command line.

IBM is signed up to test and provide feedback.

Comment 2 John Jarvis 2008-12-18 22:13:33 UTC
There seem to be a number of work items required to enable this feature:

 * Add new kernel options using the IPL command and without modifying the
content of the parmfile
(and run zipl to populate the content).
 * Temporary overwrite kernel options that are already provided by the
parmfile.
 * Replace the entire boot command line with the VM parameter string; and
bypassing any kernel
 options from the parmfile.
 * Create new Linux Named Saved Systems (NSS) on the CP/CMS command line.

Is the kernel patch IBM is delivering going to do all of these or are there other components affected here?

This enhancement request was evaluated by the full Red Hat Enterprise Linux
team for inclusion in a Red Hat Enterprise Linux minor release. As a
result of this evaluation, Red Hat has tentatively approved inclusion of
this feature in the next Red Hat Enterprise Linux Update minor release.
While it is a goal to include this enhancement in the next minor release
of Red Hat Enterprise Linux, the enhancement is not yet committed for
inclusion in the next minor release pending the next phase of actual
code integration and successful Red Hat and partner testing.
