Description of problem:
Tested audio with RHEL5.3-SP4 and RHEL5.3-SP6 client i386 version on Intel McCreary platform with codec IDT 92HD73E1X5. Only the front right channel and front left channel have sound. No sound can be heard from the other channels of rear panel.

script to gather ALSA config info

Can you please run this script on the affected hardware to gather ALSA config info? It would be very helpful to run this on x86_64 and i386 so we can compare the config differences. Thanks.

Updating PM score.

Comment 5 Brian Maly 2009-02-17 19:59:49 UTC
Looks like this might just be a configuration issue. Can you look at all the settings in alsamixer for i386 and see if the settings are the same as alsamixer settings for x86_64?

You may try saving the saving settings to file on x86_64 (file is called asound.state):
"alsactl store"

Then install the asound.state file on the i386 system and restore settings:
"alsactl restore"

Comment 6 DongpoLiu 2009-04-16 07:36:27 UTC
we can hear sound from the front right/left channels, while no sound can be heard from the channels of rear panel.

Comment 7 Jane Lv 2009-04-17 07:41:06 UTC
Brian,

Here are the steps we did for Comment #5. Still no sound from the rear panel.

1: Run "alsactl store" on RHEL5.3_x64.
 2: Enter RHEL5.3_x86.
 3: Copy file:"/etc/asound.state" from RHEL5.3_x64 to RHEL5.3_x86's "/etc".
 4: Run "alsactl restore".

And then test Multi-channel on RHEL5.3_x86.
The testing result is also same with the previous result:
Only the front right channel and front left channel have sound. No sound can be heard from the other channels of rear panel.

hello, Brian
Copy asound.state does not help on my McCreary platform.
Recently we tried latest 2.6.30 rc2 kernel, and found out we can hear all channels sounds output then.
It's strange x86_64 platform audio output is okay but x86 not work. Any hint about the difference? thanks!

Lisa,

Can you give me test results for this with latest RHEL 5.4? Wondering if we need to move this to RHEL 5.5.

Comment 12 DongpoLiu 2009-08-14 02:31:34 UTC
I tried with RHEL 5.4 SP5 with 2.6.18-160.el5 kernel, I can get audio output from rear panel's front left/right.

[root@osve-mc initial]# uname -a
Linux osve-mc 2.6.18-160.el5 #1 SMP Mon Jul 27 17:28:29 EDT 2009 i686 i686 i386 GNU/Linux

Comment 13 DongpoLiu 2009-08-14 02:47:29 UTC
for 5.1/7.1 channel, we will give updates at next monday.

Comment 14 DongpoLiu 2009-08-17 06:51:29 UTC
5.1 channel:
on both x86/x86_64 2.6.18-160 kernel, we can get audio output from rear panel's back panel jacks.

Comment 15 John Villalovos 2009-08-17 12:12:20 UTC
Closing this as current testing shows this is working in RHEL 5.4.
