I had the same problem, and thanks to your info, managed to get it fixed. I also got gnome-panel to load on login automatically again: Go to System > Preferences > Personal > Sessions, and add a new command to load at startup. The command needs to be "gnome-panel" (without the quotes, of course). I named it GNOME Panel, though you can really call it whatever you want. -Ethan
