Description Charlie Wyse 2009-02-27 21:50:38 UTC
Description of problem:
I can hear audio fine, but I can not record audio with either of the 2 microphones on the monitor.

Version-Release number of selected component (if applicable):

How reproducible:
Very

Steps to Reproduce:
1. gnome-sound-recorder, fail
2. audacity, fail
3. play around with alsamixer and pulseaudio tools, fail
4. ekiga, fail
5. skype, fail

Actual results:
No capture of audio devices.

Expected results:
To be able to capture audio from either of the 2 little microphone spaces on the monitor.

Additional info:
Quadruple checked volume and it is not muted, everything is set up to 100%. I have gone through and selected every device on here and I get nothing. Help, I want to be able to use video conferencing softare, preferably skype, but any one will do.

Comment 1 Charlie Wyse 2009-02-27 21:53:10 UTC

Comment 2 Lennart Poettering 2009-03-30 14:53:05 UTC
Please be more elaborate about what you mean by "fail"?

Is the created sound file simply silent? Or do you get an error message? if you do, could you please tell us which one it is?

Comment 3 Charlie Wyse 2009-03-31 18:52:56 UTC
Oh sorry, I just get nothing. If I use gnome-sound-recorder it records however many seconds I keep it on record. Then when I go to play back there is nothing there. With ekiga and skype I pretty much just go through and select all the different audio devices and run the test call. It asks me to say something so I yell test a lot, but nothing is there. I've even gone through alsamixer and pulses mixer thing and made sure the volume is all the way up on anything mic or audio in related. So to answer your question, it is simply silent, I can not see any error messages what so ever.

Comment 4 Lennart Poettering 2009-04-10 14:15:12 UTC
If you record data with "arecord -D hw:0 foo.wav", do you get something then? If not, your issue is unrelated to PA.

Comment 5 Charlie Wyse 2009-04-14 21:44:32 UTC
cwyse@Purgatory [:~] % arecord -D hw:0 foo.wav [14:43:37]

cwyse@Purgatory [:~] % sudo !! [14:43:50]

[sudo] password for cwyse:
Recording WAVE 'foo.wav' : Unsigned 8 bit, Rate 8000 Hz, Mono
arecord: set_params:961: Sample format non available

It does not look like I can record data.

Comment 6 Lennart Poettering 2009-04-15 17:06:36 UTC
Nah. You sound card cannot do 8bit audio, that's all.

Please retry with "arecord -D plughw:0 foo.wav".

Comment 7 Charlie Wyse 2009-04-20 21:57:07 UTC
Okay, so I ran the latest test. It doesn't error out and creates the foo.wav file. However using totem as well as vlc to play back the foo.wav file. I hear nothing. It looks like it records for whatever time I let it record for (After about 10 seconds it gives me a message about recording being over X amount of ms. But it seems to create the right length file. Just there is nothing in it. I wanted to doublecheck alsamixer to see if capture audio was turned on and it was at 100%. However when I compared capture to playback, the word capture and percentage was in red, while playback was in white... Does that mean anything you can think of?

Comment 8 Lennart Poettering 2009-04-21 00:04:27 UTC
This bug is unrelated to PA then.

Plese run 'alsamixer' and check if you selected the correct input source.

Comment 9 Charlie Wyse 2009-04-28 17:44:35 UTC
As stated in comments 1, 3, and 7, I have checked alsamixer, So I gave it another shot. When I open alsamixer I see the following:
card: pulseaudio
chip: pulseaudio
view: playback capture [all]
item: capture

Both master and capture are at 100%.

Comment 10 Lennart Poettering 2009-04-30 19:47:01 UTC
Sorry, please use "alsamixer -c0", not just "alsamixer". Thanks.

Comment 11 Charlie Wyse 2009-05-01 00:24:51 UTC
Okay, with that I see the following

card: HDA Nvidia
chip: conexant cx20561 (hermosa)

Under capture tab I have "docking, external, and internal" All of them are at 100%. The only things that I could not put to 100% are iec958 and iec958 0. They list MM and and 00. They don't seem to be changeable via alsamixer.

Comment 12 Lennart Poettering 2009-05-05 15:52:48 UTC
Are there any controls you can switch? Nothing?

Please paste the output of "amixer -c0" here.

Comment 13 Charlie Wyse 2009-05-06 17:42:28 UTC

So after looking at that I did some research on the amixer command.
I ran "amixer set Mic 100;amixer set Mic on" and now I sort of get audio. So apparently it was just off. I'm very grateful you showed me that command. Curious as to why/how it got set to off. The audio still cracks a little bit, but I think I can work that one out with a little testing. Let me know if you can think of any ways to modify that so it's clearer, but other than that, I guess you can close this ticket, thanks again.

Comment 15 Lennart Poettering 2009-05-07 01:30:47 UTC
Uh, that amixer output is a bit short. Do you multiple sound cards? This output shows no reference to the iec958 you mentioned before?

Could you please provide "amixer -cXXX" for all your cards? i.e. amixer -c0, amixer -c1, amixer -c2, and so on?

You are saying that with the "Mic" control you were able to control the volume of your playback? That is weird.

Comment 16 Charlie Wyse 2009-05-12 18:21:04 UTC
I believe I only have 1 sound card. I tried amixer and alsmixer with c1, c2, and c3 and got "wrong -c argument '1'". I'm not sure about the iec958 stuff. However since it's the only thing I can't control, that makes me thing it's simply because I don't have them. Although, I don't know why it would show up in alsamixer, I checked out amixer and IEC958 was off, I turned it on in the same manor I turned on my mic, but I still can not control it via alsamixer.

Also, I might have worded things in a confusing manor. After I used "amixer set Mic on" I was able to get playback of audio recording. I've always had audio out, just audio in was not working. After running that command, I can record audio.

Comment 17 Lennart Poettering 2009-05-12 23:28:45 UTC
ok, then please run "alsactl init". This will reset your mixer controls to the default. Does Recording work? If not, please save the output of "amixer -c0" and attach it here, then fix recording (i.e. by running "amixer set Mic On"), and attach "amixer -c0" afterwards here too.

Finally, attach the data alsa-info.sh --no-upload generates.

If we have both amixer outputs plus info which card you have we can make sure that the defaults database is updated to configure your card properly out-of-the-box.

Comment 20 Charlie Wyse 2009-05-13 00:05:20 UTC
First, I don't think the alsactl init did anything. I got the same info for both, unless I missed something. Second, I no longer can record sound. This is most likely a my faultism as I had to upgrade my system do to F10 totally screwing up my wireless and me needing to be on a customer site. But regardless. I still should be able to have sound recording in fedora.

Comment 21 Lennart Poettering 2009-05-14 15:02:29 UTC
Hmm, there seems to be a bug in the alsactl init rules, reassigning to alsa.

Comment 22 Jason Roysdon 2009-07-17 06:12:25 UTC
The same problem exists with an i686 install with HP dv9700 laptops.

Comment 23 Jason Roysdon 2009-07-17 06:13:27 UTC
Also in Fedora 11, I should say.

Comment 24 Bug Zapper 2009-11-18 09:11:26 UTC
This message is a reminder that Fedora 10 is nearing its end of life.
Approximately 30 (thirty) days from now Fedora will stop maintaining
and issuing updates for Fedora 10. It is Fedora's policy to close all
bug reports from releases that are no longer maintained. At that time
this bug will be closed as WONTFIX if it remains open with a Fedora
'version' of '10'.

Package Maintainer: If you wish for this bug to remain open because you
plan to fix it in a currently maintained version, simply change the 'version'
to a later Fedora version prior to Fedora 10's end of life.

Bug Reporter: Thank you for reporting this issue and we are sorry that
we may not be able to fix it before Fedora 10 is end of life. If you
would still like to see this bug fixed and are able to reproduce it
against a later version of Fedora please change the 'version' of this
bug to the applicable version. If you are unable to change the version,
please add a comment here and someone will do it for you.

Although we aim to fix as many bugs as possible during every release's
lifetime, sometimes those efforts are overtaken by events. Often a
more recent Fedora release includes newer upstream software that fixes

This issue went away at some point in F11 without any configuration change.

I'm not sure exactly what fixed it as I'm not sure exactly when it was fixed (I just stopped trying it until October). I do see this after after July 17 when I was testing:

I'm sorry I don't have more accurate info. I've moved on to F12. Audio records just fine out of the box with F12.
