After reproducing the failure, can you reboot to runlevel 3 and grab /var/log/Xorg.0.log? (If you reboot to regular runlevel it'll get overwritten of course...)

Ben, any other information that would be useful?

What happens if you do the restart X test as described in the test case rather than using fast user switching?

thanks!

tested with test day live cd

updating xorg server and nouveau driver makes no difference

Comment 6 Adam Williamson 2009-03-30 19:56:04 UTC
Thanks. So, this failure is specifically related to using fast user switching? OK, interesting. I guess it's multiple X servers that causes the problem, maybe.

This should've been fixed a while back, closing!

unfortunately, this is still not fixed

tested with nouveau test day livecd with updated X server and nouvau driver (version 2009-04-17)

Comment 9 Ben Skeggs 2009-04-20 20:43:06 UTC
What was the kernel version of the livecd?

Comment 10 Michal Hlavinka 2009-04-22 07:25:14 UTC
kernel-2.6.29-0.279.rc8.git6.fc11.x86_64
and updated:
xorg-x11-server 1.6.1-6.fc11
xorg-x11-drv-nouveau 0.0.12-29.20090417gitfa2f111.fc11

Comment 11 Michal Hlavinka 2009-04-22 07:25:48 UTC
btw, I can re-test with updated kernel if you think it makes a difference

Comment 12 Ben Skeggs 2009-04-22 07:56:20 UTC
Yeah, the fix for this issue went into kernel-2.6.29.1-52.fc11 :)

Comment 13 Michal Hlavinka 2009-04-24 07:44:41 UTC
I've tested with kernel-2.6.29.1-52.fc11 and it works.

Only when repeatedly switching from one user to another one, sometimes background is not redrawn completely in screen lock (it should be black with password dialog), but about one third of the screen is filled with grey and whit chessboard. But I don't know if it's nouveau related or KDE4 related.

That's a different bug, so please file it separately, or else we'll get a confused report. Thanks for the fix confirmation, closing bug.

Comment 16 Michal Hlavinka 2009-05-11 16:14:27 UTC
I'm using xorg-x11-drv-nouveau-0.0.12-35.20090507git1072103.fc11.x86_64 now and I've found similar problem. Sometimes, when second user is closing his session, it switches to first session, mouse cursor is visible (mouse does not react) and computer is frozen. Unfortunately, I'm not able to reproduce this at will. Xorg.0.log and Xorg.1.log doesn't contain anything about this (I assume no data are synced to disk). I'll check if I'm able to reproduce this with nv driver.

Comment 17 Michal Hlavinka 2009-05-13 07:00:05 UTC
Unfortunately, I'm able to reproduce this again.

When switching user, sometimes, computer gets frozen, sometimes it's responding to power off button and shuts down successfuly (not reacting to keys or mouse, display with garbage).

There is small change: in original description, problem occurred when I started second session. Now problem occurs when switching from one to second. It can be reproduced also when switching from one session to console. For both reproducers it usually doesn't occurs when switching for first time, but after several (about 10) tries.

Comment 20 Bug Zapper 2009-06-09 12:39:11 UTC
This bug appears to have been reported against 'rawhide' during the Fedora 11 development cycle.
Changing version to '11'.

Comment 21 Matěj Cepl 2009-11-05 18:23:41 UTC
Since this bugzilla report was filed, there have been several major updates in various components of the Xorg system, which may have resolved this issue. Users who have experienced this problem are encouraged to upgrade their system to the latest version of their packages. For packages from updates-testing repository you can use command

yum upgrade --enablerepo='*-updates-testing'

Alternatively, you can also try to test whether this bug is reproducible with the upcoming Fedora 12 distribution by downloading LiveMedia of F12 Beta available at http://alt.fedoraproject.org/pub/alt/nightly-composes/ . By using that you get all the latest packages without need to install anything on your computer. For more information on using LiveMedia take a look at https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/FedoraLiveCD .

Please, if you experience this problem on the up-to-date system, let us now in the comment for this bug, or whether the upgraded system works for you.

If you won't be able to reply in one month, I will have to close this bug as INSUFFICIENT_DATA. Thank you.

[This is a bulk message for all open Fedora Rawhide Xorg-related bugs. I'm adding myself to the CC list for each bug, so I'll see any comments you make after this and do my best to make sure every issue gets proper attention.]

Comment 22 Michal Hlavinka 2009-11-06 09:17:48 UTC
I no longer have hardware I was able to reproduce this on. That laptop died three weeks ago

Comment 23 Adam Williamson 2009-11-06 20:41:26 UTC
since we never had any other reproducer, we'll have to close this, then.
