gnome-terminal --tab opens new windows instead of tabs

Description of problem:
Running 'gnome-terminal --tab' opens a new window instead of a new tab. According to the --help:
--tab Open a new tab in the
last-opened window with the
default profile. More than
one of these options can be

Steps to Reproduce:
1. gnome-terminal --tab &
a new gnome-terminal window opens
a new tab opens in the most-recent-opened gnome-terminal window

patch to fix --tab behavior
Here is a patch written by Siddhesh Poyarekar <firstname.lastname@example.org> to correct the --tab behavior.
There's an upstream bug on this that's been open for 7 years...

This request was evaluated by Red Hat Product Management for
inclusion, but this component is not scheduled to be updated in
the current Red Hat Enterprise Linux release. If you would like
this request to be reviewed for the next minor release, ask your
