Description John Griffiths 2009-04-08 15:41:55 UTC
Description of problem:
When the greeter is configured to not show a list of users per https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=449728#c9 (Bug 449728 comment 9), the simple greeter displays "other" and no longer keeps the default desktop, if you have more than one configured, for the user. The user has to enter their user name, enter their password, go to the bottom of the screen and select the desktop that is wanted if other than the default, and then log in.

Version-Release number of selected component (if applicable):
gdm-2.24.1-4.fc10.i386

How reproducible:
Always

Steps to Reproduce:
1. Add kde or other desktop to system if the system does not already have more than gnome.

2. Configure greeter to not show users.
gconftool-2 --config-source xml:readwrite:/etc/gconf/gconf.xml.defaults --direct --type bool --set /apps/gdm/simple-greeter/disable_user_list true

3. Log in as a user selecting desktop other than gnome.

4. Log out.

5. Log in again as same user without selecting desktop.

Actual results:
Gnome is used as the desktop.

Expected results:
If the default or use last desktop for user is defined, then that should be used at log in.

Additional info:
I suspect that the problem lies in that greeter display "Other" for logins when users are not used and ignores the desktop settings for the actual user name entered.

Our users have discovered this and been very annoyed by it. The only real work-around is to switch to kdm which isn't exactly perfect, but at least it acts upon the user's desktop preference (in .dmrc).

Comment 2 Martin Donald 2009-06-18 23:04:39 UTC
After upgrading to Fedora-11 on my wife's machine I have this same problem. Gdm does not remember my previous choice of desktop (XFCE4).

My ~/.dmrc contains:

[Desktop]
Language=en_US.utf8
Session=xfce4

but the default on the task-bar is always "GNOME" not the other option "XFce4"

It is very annoying.

Comment 3 Ian Collier 2009-07-08 10:14:36 UTC
In addition, it appears that if I choose the desktop before/while typing in my user name, the desktop choice is reset to GNOME when the password prompt appears; thus you have to remember to make the selection in the right order or else you'll find yourself logging into GNOME even though you were supposed to have selected a different desktop.

Comment 4 Bug Zapper 2009-11-18 11:42:38 UTC
This message is a reminder that Fedora 10 is nearing its end of life.
Approximately 30 (thirty) days from now Fedora will stop maintaining
and issuing updates for Fedora 10. It is Fedora's policy to close all
bug reports from releases that are no longer maintained. At that time
this bug will be closed as WONTFIX if it remains open with a Fedora
'version' of '10'.

Package Maintainer: If you wish for this bug to remain open because you
plan to fix it in a currently maintained version, simply change the 'version'
to a later Fedora version prior to Fedora 10's end of life.

Bug Reporter: Thank you for reporting this issue and we are sorry that
we may not be able to fix it before Fedora 10 is end of life. If you
would still like to see this bug fixed and are able to reproduce it
against a later version of Fedora please change the 'version' of this
bug to the applicable version. If you are unable to change the version,
please add a comment here and someone will do it for you.

Although we aim to fix as many bugs as possible during every release's
lifetime, sometimes those efforts are overtaken by events. Often a
more recent Fedora release includes newer upstream software that fixes
bugs or makes them obsolete.

The process we are following is described here:
http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/BugZappers/HouseKeeping

Comment 5 Bug Zapper 2009-12-18 09:13:04 UTC
Fedora 10 changed to end-of-life (EOL) status on 2009-12-17. Fedora 10 is
no longer maintained, which means that it will not receive any further
security or bug fix updates. As a result we are closing this bug.

If you can reproduce this bug against a currently maintained version of
Fedora please feel free to reopen this bug against that version.

Thank you for reporting this bug and we are sorry it could not be fixed.
