Description Edwin ten Brink 2009-04-29 07:15:32 UTC
Created attachment 341710 [details]
squid start-up errors

Description of problem:
gadmin-squid does not generate valid squid.conf, in addition some pre-existing settings are lost. Existing squid.conf is not protected by a backup, so no rollback is possible.

Version-Release number of selected component (if applicable):
gadmin-squid-0.1.0-0.4.fc10.i386
squid-3.0.STABLE13-1.fc10.i386

How reproducible:
Always.

Steps to Reproduce:
1. Make a backup copy of your existing (working) /etc/squid/squid.conf !
2. Install gadmin-squid
3. Open gadmin-squid (do not make any changes)
4. Close gadmin-squid
5. Restart squid

Actual results:
squid fails to start complaining about several unrecognized options and some warnings which are not good defaults (see attachment for details).

Expected results:
- gadmin-squid loading *all* predefined values from squid.conf
- gadmin-squid making a backup of the existing configuration
- gadmin-squid not stripping away all comments which were in the original configuration file
- squid normally restarting with the unchanged configuration

Additional info:
None.

Comment 1 Edwin ten Brink 2009-07-19 20:44:13 UTC
No update has occurred from Fedora 10 to Fedora 11. It also seems that upstream has not been updated for a very long time (since Fedora 7).

Adding F12Blocker:
I would like to suggest to remove this package from the distribution as of Fedora 12 since the issue I mentioned in my original report most probably cannot be solved by the packager and seems not to be actively maintained by upstream. The package is unfortunately not (yet) fit for purpose.

Comment 2 S.A. Hartsuiker 2009-07-27 10:20:31 UTC
I agree, please remove this for F12, as I don't have a lot of time at the moment to get this fixed. Since it is not really functional in F11 it will most certainly not work in F12. No use in distributing non-working packages.

Sorry for the lag, btw.

Comment 3 Edwin ten Brink 2009-07-27 11:23:52 UTC
The maintainer can retire the package, per the procedure:
https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/PackageMaintainers/PackageEndOfLife

Comment 4 Jesse Keating 2009-10-21 21:49:44 UTC
Since this obviously doesn't work, I'm going to boot it from the distro.

I'll leave the bug open as the tool will need to be updated.

Comment 5 Edwin ten Brink 2009-11-12 19:22:09 UTC
The author updated his package to 0.1.2 on November 10th 2009. The ChangeLog claims to have resolved most of the problems of my original report.

I myself am no longer using the program, will not be using it in the future and have therefore not tested the claims of the ChangeLog.

The maintainer seem to have unofficially orphaned the package (see comment #2), and needs to do so officially so someone else may step up to maintain the package or leave it to be retired. Alternatively, the maintainer can retire the package himself (see comment #3).

Comment 6 S.A. Hartsuiker 2009-11-21 04:45:06 UTC
I will package the new version this weekend.

Comment 7 S.A. Hartsuiker 2009-11-22 23:00:01 UTC
Hmm, new version works, but I get "BuildError: package gadmin-squid is blocked for tag dist-f12-updates-candidate", which would be correct I suppose.
Who do I contact to undo that blockage?
