Description of problem: There is no sound output when playing any kind of music file, even playing a wav file with aplay does not work. I even de-installed pulse-audio but still does not work. I checked alsamixer and maximized and unmuted every channel without any luck. Even tried with a headset... How reproducible: always Steps to Reproduce: 1. run alsamixer and maximize volume / unmute 2. aplay /usr/share/sounds/k3b_error1.wav (plays but w/o anything audible) 3. Actual results: no sound output Expected results: sound output Additional info: lspci -nn |grep -i audio 00:1b.0 Audio device [0403]: Intel Corporation 82801G (ICH7 Family) High Definition Audio Controller [8086:27d8] (rev 02)
This bug appears to have been reported against 'rawhide' during the Fedora 11 development cycle. Changing version to '11'. More information and reason for this action is here: http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/BugZappers/HouseKeeping
I have the same on my Vaio. In order to use some feature of vaio, I always pass a model=vaio argument to module. After a while after boot, the sound goes off. Sometimes the Output device changes to NULL output. Can any expert give a quick temprary fix, while bug gets fixed (like restarting pulseaudio) Thanks
I had some missing 32 bit libs (now 586). Installing them almost fixed it for me.
I have the same problem with my T61 which has a later version of the intel controller; I don't get any error messages, but I don't get any sound either. http://www.alsa-project.org/db/?f=e75c9641f23598cd533cbc91754d2de63d314f84 Simple mixer control 'Master',0 Capabilities: pvolume pswitch pswitch-joined Playback channels: Front Left - Front Right Limits: Playback 0 - 65536 Mono: Front Left: Playback 65536 [100%] [on] Front Right: Playback 65536 [100%] [on] Simple mixer control 'Capture',0 Capabilities: cvolume cswitch cswitch-joined Capture channels: Front Left - Front Right Limits: Capture 0 - 65536 Front Left: Capture 55706 [85%] [on] Front Right: Capture 55706 [85%] [on]
This bug was not present in 20090331 rawhide: I get sound from http://jlaska.fedorapeople.org/live/livecd-fedora-livecd-testday-20090331-i386.iso, though it has frequent pops, perhaps from the sound system starting and stopping?
I also get sound from the F11 Preview release LiveCD, and it doesn't have the popping issue either.
So that was alsa-lib-1.0.19-3.fc11.i586/kernel-2.6.29.1-102.fc11.i686 on Preview, and alsa-lib-1.0.20-1.fc11.i586/kernel-PAE-2.6.29.4-167.fc11.i686 on final release.
But downgrading to those packages doesn't make sound work.

The solution was to open Advanced Sound Control, go to the Switches tab, and check the Speaker box.
jason, you've rather hijacked this report. It's not at all certain your issue is the same as Stefan's; there are dozens of different implementations of the Intel sound codecs (8x0 and HDA), each with their own quirks. ICH8 implementations are quite different from ICH7, and there are even different types of ICH7 and ICH8... bearing this in mind, could you please open a new bug for your problem, with just the useful stuff (really just the information that checking Speaker fixes it, and the alsa-info diff, are all we need)? Thanks. stefan, for you, can we please get the output of alsa-info.sh ? We need this to investigate your problem. Thanks. -- Fedora Bugzappers volunteer triage team https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/BugZappers

That's odd. Your chipset looks to be pretty well supported, I can't find anyone else having trouble with it. Have to leave this one to Jaroslav :\. sorry. subsystem ID is 17aa:2010. Hell, it's even in the codec graphing database - http://helllabs.org/codecgraph/ . Weird. -- Fedora Bugzappers volunteer triage team https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/BugZappers
lspci -nn |grep -i audio 00:1b.0 Audio device [0403]: Intel Corporation 82801G (ICH7 Family) High Definition Audio Controller [8086:27d8] (rev 02) Sound output in preferences shows 'Null Output' Adam, looks like I'm exhibiting identical symptoms on my T60 as you are.
mike: we need 'alsa-info.sh' output to identify your chipset accurately. Just lspci -nn isn't enough for HDA sound chips, as several different ones can sometimes share the same PCI ID; we identify them by their subsystem ID, which alsa-info provides (along with other useful information). If you provide that output we can see if your issue is the same as Stefan's, or not. Thanks!
I have a T60 with the same problem: no sound. I believe it worked after installing Fedora 11. I know it didn't work late last week (7/2/2009). I'll attach the alsa-info.sh output.

That's awesome, it was really very tricky indeed..it works fine for me now on my IBM Thinkpad T61. chipset is :- lspci -nn | grep -i audio 00:1b.0 Audio device [0403]: Intel Corporation 82801H (ICH8 Family) HD Audio Controller [8086:284b] (rev 03)

Sound was working prior to the 'yum update' and fails after. Below is the alsa output after the full update. http://www.alsa-project.org/db/?f=5ddebf974275b230d3d16c71e2021b9397507140
OK, so Naveen and Mike both definitely have the same chipset as Stefan. Naveen, Stefan - I don't suppose you can remember whether it was the same in your case as it was in Mike's (i.e. it worked on first installation, but not after an update)? -- Fedora Bugzappers volunteer triage team https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/BugZappers
I definitely never experienced working sound and I made a fresh installation the day that F11 got released. Unfortunately I don't have the system around any more.
I think it worked for a while, but I can't remember for sure. I had F10 on here for a while and upgraded to 11 at some point. I'm not sure if I had tried sound between when I upgraded and when I noticed sound not working.
I'm also seeing this on my Lenovo T60p. Same chipset as Stefan. I think that I recall functioning sound upon initial installation from the LiveCD, and only noticed failures after one yum update or another. But it may be that I'm confusing it with Fedora 9, which I'd had installed previously.
I continue to experience this issue after the recent upgrade from 2.6.29 to kernel-2.6.30.5-43.fc11.i586. I have a mono usb headset that plays audio just fine if I switch the Sound preferences to use it. The internal adapter just isn't functioning.
This message is a reminder that Fedora 11 is nearing its end of life. Approximately 30 (thirty) days from now Fedora will stop maintaining and issuing updates for Fedora 11. It is Fedora's policy to close all bug reports from releases that are no longer maintained. At that time this bug will be closed as WONTFIX if it remains open with a Fedora 'version' of '11'. Package Maintainer: If you wish for this bug to remain open because you plan to fix it in a currently maintained version, simply change the 'version' to a later Fedora version prior to Fedora 11's end of life. Bug Reporter: Thank you for reporting this issue and we are sorry that we may not be able to fix it before Fedora 11 is end of life. If you would still like to see this bug fixed and are able to reproduce it against a later version of Fedora please change the 'version' of this bug to the applicable version. If you are unable to change the version, please add a comment here and someone will do it for you. Although we aim to fix as many bugs as possible during every release's lifetime, sometimes those efforts are overtaken by events. Often a more recent Fedora release includes newer upstream software that fixes bugs or makes them obsolete. The process we are following is described here: http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/BugZappers/HouseKeeping
Fedora 11 changed to end-of-life (EOL) status on 2010-06-25. Fedora 11 is no longer maintained, which means that it will not receive any further security or bug fix updates. As a result we are closing this bug. If you can reproduce this bug against a currently maintained version of Fedora please feel free to reopen this bug against that version. Thank you for reporting this bug and we are sorry it could not be fixed.
