Description of problem: Intel GM45 laptop. gdm starts cloned (at 10x7), but the session configuration is set for VGA left of LVDS. After the session config is applied, nautilus takes quite a while to switch from a tile of the old background to the new background. We _could_ send a message from gnome-settings-daemon to the session before applying the new display config, to trigger pre-rendering of the new wallpaper. But that seems fragile since we're also going to get display config changes from xrandr, games, etc. Possibly better is to change the background to a (theme-appropriate) solid fill when the change happens, and then crossfade from that to the new wallpaper when it's finished loading.
