Description eagleton 2009-07-21 08:24:38 UTC
Description of problem:
testpage only prints empty pages with some garbage at the top apart from "Your are using the wrong driver". Printing in general does not work.

Version-Release number of selected component (if applicable):
1.1.7-4.fc11 (i586)

How reproducible:
- install Deskjet 959C via system-config-printer
- check brand and model under printer preferences
- it says HP 910 hpijs, hpijs 3.9.2, while it should give
HP Deskjet 959c hpijs, hpijs 3.9.2

Device URI is usb://HP/DESKJET%20950C?serial=ES11T1901WDF - it should be
hp:/usb/DeskJet_950C?serial=ES11T1901WDF

Comment 1 Jiri Popelka 2009-07-23 12:29:02 UTC
And does it print if you set
the driver (to HP Deskjet 959c hpijs, hpijs 3.9.2)
and/or Device URI (to hp:/usb/DeskJet_950C?serial=ES11T1901WDF)
manually ?

Please also attach the output of
lpinfo -l -v

Yes, although I often get a "printer might not be connected" error after it has worked at least once. I have to rerun system-config-printer then, after which it works for 1 or several printjobs again.

I can't reproduce this problem here using system-config-printer-1.1.8-6.fc11. Here's how I tested it:

$ cat /usr/lib/cups/backend/test
#!/bin/bash
cat <<"EOF"
direct test:/usb/DeskJet_950C "HP DeskJet 950C" "HP DeskJet 950C" "MFG:HEWLETT-PACKARD;MDL:DESKJET 950C;CMD:MLC,PCL,PML;CLASS:PRINTER;DESCRIPTION:Hewlett-Packard DeskJet 950C;SERN:ES11T1901WDF;VSTATUS:$HB0$NC0,ff,DN,IDLE,CUT,K1,C0,SM,NR,KP000,CP014;VP:0800,FL,B0;VJ:                    ;"
EOF
$ stat /usr/lib/cups/backend/test | grep rwx
Access: (0755/-rwxr-xr-x)  Uid: (    0/    root)   Gid: (    0/    root)

This dummy backend pretends to know your printer. With system-config-printer I clicked 'New', selected this dummy device, clicked Forward, and Apply. Double-clicking on the resulting printer in the list shows:

Make and Model: HP DeskJet 950C Foomatic/hpijs (recommended)

(Unfortunately the printer doesn't identify itself any more specifically than 950C.)

Can you try again with system-config-printer-1.1.8-6.fc11 (should be one of the updates appearing in the last few days)?

Aside from this driver selection issue (let's call it problem 1), there are two other potential problems you've noted:
2. The 'hp' backend does not detect this device for some reason
3. The 'printer might not be connected problem'

Please let us know if the other two problems still occur with system-config-printer-1.1.8-6.fc11 as well.

With system-config-printer-1.1.8-6.fc11, the printer is setup correctly now! It identifies as HP DeskJet 950C Foomatic/hpijs (recommended), which is the same as with earlier versions of Fedora and other Linux distros.

Thanks so much for your time and I will get back to you if the other problems still appear.

Great, thanks for testing. I'll put this bug into CURRENTRELEASE state for the time being -- re-open if you see the other problems.
