Description John Dennis 2009-07-24 20:52:24 UTC
According to bug #496770 gsynaptics is not maintained and not fixable. Apparently part of the functionality of gsynaptics has been subsumed into the mouse settings applet. Which does apparently seem to work and is maintained.

Part of the problem of having gsynaptics in the distribution is that many folks are used to using it to set their touchpad properties, except they're getting frustrated because it no longer works and they are not aware it's been superceded by a new preferences applet. It better not to delude them with false expectations.

Comment 1 David Batson 2009-10-12 13:01:37 UTC
I disagree. For me, gsynaptics does what I need and gpointing-device-settings does not.

I am running F11 fully updated on a ThinkPad T42 with a Synaptics touchpad. When I installed F11, I installed gsynaptics. I was able to disable my touchpad and the setting stayed through a reboot. Later through a F11 update, gsynaptics was superceded by gpointing-device-settings. Although I could disable my touchpad with gpointing-device-settings, this setting did not stick through a reboot.

The only way I could fix this was by uninstalling gpointing-device-settings, then use the following command to install gsynaptics...

rpm -Uvh --oldpackage ftp://mirrors.kernel.org/fedora/releases/11/Everything/i386/os/Packages/gsynaptics-0.9.16-1.fc11.i586.rpm

Then exclude gpointing* and gsynaptics* in /etc/yum.conf so that gsynaptics did not get replaced by gpointing-device-settings.

I hope that gsynaptics continues to be available.

this should be fixed in gpointing-device-settings then instead of having gsynaptics hang around.

Comment 4 Bug Zapper 2010-04-28 09:18:28 UTC
This message is a reminder that Fedora 11 is nearing its end of life.
Approximately 30 (thirty) days from now Fedora will stop maintaining
and issuing updates for Fedora 11. It is Fedora's policy to close all
bug reports from releases that are no longer maintained. At that time
this bug will be closed as WONTFIX if it remains open with a Fedora
'version' of '11'.

Package Maintainer: If you wish for this bug to remain open because you
plan to fix it in a currently maintained version, simply change the 'version'
to a later Fedora version prior to Fedora 11's end of life.

Bug Reporter: Thank you for reporting this issue and we are sorry that
we may not be able to fix it before Fedora 11 is end of life. If you
would still like to see this bug fixed and are able to reproduce it
against a later version of Fedora please change the 'version' of this
bug to the applicable version. If you are unable to change the version,
please add a comment here and someone will do it for you.

Although we aim to fix as many bugs as possible during every release's
lifetime, sometimes those efforts are overtaken by events. Often a
more recent Fedora release includes newer upstream software that fixes
bugs or makes them obsolete.

The process we are following is described here:

Comment 5 Peter Hutterer 2010-05-18 05:26:02 UTC
Moving to F-13 so that bugzapper doesn't close on us.

Andreas - are you alright with removing this package? It's dead upstream, the last commit to it was by me February 2009 and we have to carry patches just to make it build. It's been replaced by gp-d-s.

Let me know either way, otherwise I'll remove it in two weeks from now.

Comment 6 Andreas Thienemann 2010-05-18 08:42:02 UTC
Uhh. I thought we already decided to kill it. If you wanna do it, go ahead. :)

Comment 7 Peter Hutterer 2010-05-19 00:33:53 UTC
done, all killed and rel-eng ticket is submitted. I can't seem to retire it in FAS though, possibly because I'm not the owner. Please go to http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/PackageMaintainers/PackageEndOfLife and do step 5.

Once that's done, you can close the bug.

Comment 8 Peter Hutterer 2010-05-19 22:51:35 UTC
rel-eng ticket is resolved and gsynaptics is blocked for F-14. I saw the retired messages go through from pkgdb, so gsynaptics is now truly dead.
