Description Aioanei Rares 2009-07-27 19:45:30 UTC
Description of problem:

Version-Release number of selected component (if applicable):

xorg-x11-drv-nouveau-0.0.14-3.20090717gitb1b2330.fc12.x86_64.rpm

How reproducible:
everytime

Steps to Reproduce:
1.start X with the aforementioned kernel versions
2.the screen will go blank, flicker a few times, but the system doesn't freeze, just becomes unusable (ctrl+alt+Fx doesn't work)
3.

Actual results:

Expected results:

Additional info:

Adding vga=0x314 or vga=0x317 works. This is an older Nvidia NX 6200 card.

Comment 1 John Ellson 2009-08-01 13:34:07 UTC
Adding vga=0x314 worked for me too, nVidia Corporation G70 [GeForce 7800 GT].
Thanks.

This is a dup of: Bug #514313

Comment 2 Ben Skeggs 2009-08-02 07:24:47 UTC
Please update to the latest rawhide kernel (kernel-2.6.31-0.118.rc5.fc12) and try again. If it still fails, seeing your /var/log/messages from after the failure would be useful. Please remove any vga= lines also, they will quite likely break things when mixed with kernel modesetting currently.

Comment 3 John Ellson 2009-08-02 12:25:33 UTC
I tried -0.118 w/o vga=, but it still failed to boot. Hung somewhere in udev processing. Reinstated vga=0x314 and it booted successfully.

I'll attach /var/log/messages from after the successful boot.

Comment 5 Ben Skeggs 2009-08-02 13:20:49 UTC
Mmm DDC appears to fail unless you boot with vesafb also, interesting. What happens if you boot without any vga= and with nouveau.modeset=0 ?

Comment 6 Aioanei Rares 2009-08-02 14:18:16 UTC
The machine I was testing this on died on me unexpectedly, so I've yet to do some work to get it working again.

Comment 7 John Ellson 2009-08-03 02:11:38 UTC
Re Comment #5 :

OK, without any vga= and with nouveau.modeset=0 reboots OK.

Do you need /va/r/log/messages?

Comment 8 Ben Skeggs 2009-08-03 02:32:54 UTC
Cool, thanks for that. Nope, that won't be needed. Your /var/log/Xorg.0.log may be interesting to see, but it's pretty clear there's something broken in the KMS DDC code. I'll look into that.

Xorg.0.log

Comment 10 Ben Skeggs 2009-08-04 07:11:51 UTC
That's a log from the NVIDIA binary driver, not nouveau! But, it's enough to see that DDC is working fine there.

When the kernel at http://koji.fedoraproject.org/koji/taskinfo?taskID=1578486 has finished building, can you install it and retry nouveau without any graphics-related boot options set?

If it still doesn't work, I'd be really interested in seeing your /var/log/messages after booting with "drm.debug=1 3"

Thanks,
Ben.

Comment 11 John Ellson 2009-08-04 11:11:28 UTC
Still doesn't boot with: kernel-2.6.31-0.125.rc5.git2.fc12.x86_64
with: drm.debug=1 3
without: nouveau.modeset=0

Console ends with message: Integrated sync not supported

Flip switches and it reboots OK.

Comment 12 John Ellson 2009-08-04 11:13:47 UTC
Which raises the question, what is the correct way to disable nouveau?
Am I expected to remove the driver?

Can you attach your /var/log/messages from the "drm.debug=1 3" case please?

Xorg.0.log when booting from f11 liveusb

I can always boot from Fedora 11 liveusb. It is intersting that there is no xorg.conf in liveusb system. Have you tried booting without xorg.conf or XF86Config,( renaming xorg.conf or simply deleting it)

Comment 15 John Ellson 2009-08-05 09:41:58 UTC
Re Comment #13

I don't get anything in /var/log/messages with "drm.debug=1 3" and without "nouveau.modeset=0". Boot doesn't get that far.

Comment 16 Aioanei Rares 2009-08-06 10:13:56 UTC
Ok, got my machine up and running, so everything you'll need I'll be happy to provide.

Comment 17 Adam Williamson 2009-08-18 23:29:58 UTC
what's the status with latest kernel and nouveau from koji?

Works ok now.

Comment 19 Adam Williamson 2009-08-19 16:34:22 UTC
OK, closing (those builds will go in Rawhide as soon as we unfreeze).
