So the applications seem to think that they are playing something (i.e. the playback time increases), but you cannot hear anything?

Have you tried to switch the sound card's profiles/port with g-v-c or pavucontrol?

Did you try to figure out with "alsamixer -c0" if you can convince the mixer to produce proper audio? If so, which control did you have to change?

Comment 2 Quentin Armitage 2009-08-11 09:34:21 UTC
It seems thee were several problems. I have now changed the sound card's port to "Analog Output /Amplifier" from "Analog Output", and I now get sound output. I found that Rhythmbox worked then, but Audacity did not.

In order to get Audacity to work, I then had to set the output device away from default and back to default, and then Audacity worked, but with some volume issues. Whenever Audacity plays sound output, it adjusts the output volume, and each time it runs it changes it further, either getting louder each time or getting quieter each time. When it gets louder each time, pavucontrol can show the output volume as greater than 100%; I have attached the output of pulseaudio -vvvvv showing this happening.

Also, when Audacity starts playing sound, in pavucontrol on the playback tab, I see "ALSA plugin [audacity]" with two volume bars flash up and disappear several times before it stays on the tab and plays the sound.

Finally, when adjusting the volume with alsamixer using the up and down arrow keys, sometimes the left and right volumes the left and right volumes become different from each other, which the man page suggests should not be the case. I am also attaching the output of pulseaudio -vvvvv when this happens, since it seems to be caused when the hardware volume is read.

If the above need reporting as separate bugs, I am happy to do so.

pulseaudio -vvvvv output when alsamixer sets different volumes on L/R channels

Comment 5 Lennart Poettering 2009-08-11 18:33:54 UTC
Hmm, the audacity issue probably some kind of feedback loop. i.e. audacity writes back volume data it read from the ALSA device. it really shouldn't do that.

There seem to be several different issues here and it would help clarity if they were separated, I think.

To summarize, I think we have:

Issue #1: no output unless "changed the sound card's port to "Analog Output /Amplifier" from "Analog Output""

Issue #2: no sound in Audacity unless "set the output device away from
default and back to default"

Issue #3: "Whenever Audacity plays sound output, it adjusts the output volume, and
each time it runs it changes it further, either getting louder each time or
getting quieter each time."

Issue #4: "when Audacity starts playing sound, in pavucontrol on the playback tab, I see "ALSA plugin [audacity]" with two volume bars flash up and disappear several times before it stays on the tab and plays the sound"

Issue #5: "when adjusting the volume with alsamixer using the up and down arrow
keys, sometimes the left and right volumes the left and right volumes become
different from each other, which the man page suggests should not be the case."

I would recommend filing each of these as a separate bug. I'm assuming #1 is a change you make in 'alsamixer -c0', in which case it's a bug in the kernel driver for your card. Please file it together with the information described in https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=497966#c1 .

#2 should be filed on Audacity. It'd help if you can reproduce this reliably with a fresh user account, I think.

#3 again, should be filed on Audacity - including Lennart's theory as to what's going on may help the Audacity maintainers.

#4 I would guess is also an Audacity issue, something wrong in its sound code, but I suppose it could be a PA issue also. Perhaps you could provide pulseaudio -vvvv output when reproducing *just* this particular issue, that may help diagnose.

#5 is that when adjusting the volume for the PulseAudio 'card' in alsamixer, or when adjusting the volume for your actual physical card (i.e. alsamixer -c0 or whatever)? If the latter, I'd guess it's a driver bug, if the former, a PA bug, but Lennart should be able to say more definitively.

If you could file the bugs separately as described above, and link to each report in a comment, that'd be great, and we can close this one. Thanks a lot.

This bug appears to have been reported against 'rawhide' during the Fedora 12 development cycle.
Changing version to '12'.

Comment 8 John Griffiths 2010-01-07 20:10:57 UTC
I found this problem. Some applications would play sound and some would not.

I found that opening PulseAudio Volume Control (pavucontrol) the volume was
muted by default in the Playback and the Output Devices tabs.

By unmuting and adjusting the volume I got sound in all the apps that did not
have them before.

Comment 9 Quentin Armitage 2010-02-28 12:34:10 UTC
I have not experience this problem for a couple of months now, so I assume that some update has resolved this.

Great, thanks for letting us know.
