Got this too on a T41 with rawhide up-to-date as of 2009-09-10. Maybe a mesa thing not a gnome-shell thing? I also get glyph corruption after having run gnome-shell twice; not sure if that's related or independent but I haven't seen it before on this machine.

The T41 has an Radeon Mobility M7 LW with 32MB of VRAM. Also the ati driver version: xorg-x11-drv-ati-6.13.0-0.3.20090908git651fe5a47.fc12.i686
I have a *T42* actually, not a T41. my bad.
Fixed by http://koji.fedoraproject.org/koji/buildinfo?buildID=131131 but of course r100 has additional issues.
