Xorg.0.log when running xinit with just xterm in ~/.xinitrc and killing X, markers "===========>" added by me

Description of problem:
When I use the german "Neo" keyboard layout, X11 is killed with shift+backspace but not with ctrl+alt+backspace. This does not happen with other layouts.

This happens on two different computers (one i586, one x86_64) with the nouveau driver and also with the nvidia driver. I also tried a newer developer version of /usr/share/X11/xkb/symbols/de from neo-layout.org but this didn't change the behavior.

Version-Release number of selected component (if applicable):
xorg-x11-server-* 1.6.1.901-1.fc11
xkeyboard-config 1.5-5.fc11

How reproducible:
Allways

Steps to Reproduce:
1. run X
2. run "setxkbmap de neo"
3. press ctrl+alt+backspace
4. press shift+backspace

Actual results:
X terminates after step 4

Expected results:
X does not terminate after step 4 (when step 3 is omitted)
X terminates after step 3

Additional info:
Xorg.0.log does not show any errors at the place the killing happens.

Since this bugzilla report was filed, there have been several major updates in various components of the Xorg system, which may have resolved this issue. Users who have experienced this problem are encouraged to upgrade their system to the latest version of their packages. For packages from updates-testing repository you can use command

yum upgrade --enablerepo='*-updates-testing'

Alternatively, you can also try to test whether this bug is reproducible with the upcoming Fedora 12 distribution by downloading LiveMedia of F12 Beta available at http://alt.fedoraproject.org/pub/alt/nightly-composes/ . By using that you get all the latest packages without need to install anything on your computer. For more information on using LiveMedia take a look at https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/FedoraLiveCD .

Please, if you experience this problem on the up-to-date system, let us now in the comment for this bug, or whether the upgraded system works for you.

If you won't be able to reply in one month, I will have to close this bug as INSUFFICIENT_DATA. Thank you.

[This is a bulk message for all open Fedora Rawhide Xorg-related bugs. I'm adding myself to the CC list for each bug, so I'll see any comments you make after this and do my best to make sure every issue gets proper attention.]

Comment 2 Lukas Middendorf 2009-11-18 11:08:41 UTC
I have retested on F11 with everything updated to maximum (including xorg-x11-server* 1.6.4-0.3.fc11 from updates testing), the behavior still has not changed.

On F12 X is no longer killed with shift+backspace. I can still not kill it with ctrl+alt+backspace, which is possible with other keyboard layouts.

Thanks for the bug report. We have reviewed the information you have provided above, and there is some additional information we require that will be helpful in our diagnosis of this issue.

Please attach your X server config file (/etc/X11/xorg.conf, if available), output of the dmesg command, and X server log file (/var/log/Xorg.*.log) to the bug report as individual uncompressed file attachments using the bugzilla file attachment link below.

We will review this issue again once you've had a chance to attach this information.

Thanks in advance.

Comment 5 Lukas Middendorf 2010-03-14 15:54:22 UTC
The bug still exists, but slightly different now. When I start xorg with "de nodeadkeys" layout in /etc/sysconfig/keyboard, I can kill xorg with ctrl+alt+backspace (this is what I want to happen).
When I have "de neo" layout in /etc/sysconfig/keyboard the same seems to happen for shift+backspace (or backspace alone when capslock is enabled), but not for ctrl+alt+backspace.

When I use setxkbmap to change the keyboard layout, I can not kill xorg with any keyboard layout, not with ctrl+alt+backspace and not with shift+backspace.

Comment 7 Lukas Middendorf 2010-03-14 16:58:31 UTC
I did some more testing.
When I add "-option terminate:ctrl_alt_bksp" to setxkbmap I can kill xorg also after using setxkbmap (ctrl+alt+bksp for nodeadkeys, shift+bksp for neo).

When I use
"setxkbmap de,de neo,nodeadkeys -option grp:sclk_toggle,terminate:ctrl_alt_bksp"
I can kill xorg with shift+bksp for both layouts.

When I use
"setxkbmap de,de nodeadkeys,neo -option grp:sclk_toggle,terminate:ctrl_alt_bksp"
I can kill xorg with ctrl+alt+bksp when nodeadkeys is active and I can not kill xorg when neo is active.

And startx has some console output that does not appear in Xorg.0.log:
for de neo I get:

The XKEYBOARD keymap compiler (xkbcomp) reports:
> Warning: Type "ONE_LEVEL" has 1 levels, but <LSGT> has 4 symbols
> Ignoring extra symbols
> Warning: Type "ONE_LEVEL" has 1 levels, but <RALT> has 2 symbols
> Ignoring extra symbols

for de nodeadkeys I get:

The XKEYBOARD keymap compiler (xkbcomp) reports:
> Warning: Type "ONE_LEVEL" has 1 levels, but <RALT> has 2 symbols
> Ignoring extra symbols

Does the scratch build below work for you? de(neo) specifies the backspace symbol explicitly and thus assigns the wrong group for the key. By simply removing it, it picks up the default definition.

Sorry, I forget to mention that I'm on F12 now.
Nevertheless your change solves this problem. Now backspace does not work on Level3 (activated with CAPS) any more, but I guess this is a lesser evil than a dying xorg (and I also do not want to disable terminate:ctrl_alt_bksp).

Sorry, it's a problem with KDE. katepart is handling backspaces by itself and has only "backspace" and "shift+backspace" assigned to it. I retested the original version and it didn't work previously either (I just didn't test because I feared to kill xorg by doing so).
In other applications it works correctly.
