Description Tomasz Chrzczonowicz 2009-09-12 06:10:19 UTC
Description of problem:

Users should be able to send comments by e-mail, just like in Launchpad.
This would be wildly more productive for everyone.

One could just hit "reply" to a message, rather than firing up a browser, logging in and posting a comment. If you multiply it by number of Bugzilla e-mails one gets daily, it's a really huge time saver.

Also, it would be very handy to be able to send attachments to bugzilla by e-mail.

If you worry about spam, then perhaps gpg signature checks could be put in place.

Besides, Launchpad uses it and they don't seem spammed to death.

IMHO, this bug should be pushed upstream and CLOSED/UPSTREAM. This is nothing we should change in our instance. http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Staying_close_to_upstream_projects

Bugzilla does support some basic communication via email but we have not enabled it on our servers. I know it supports adding of comments but I am not sure about attachments. The reason we have not implemented it so far is we are still working on the authentication issue. Right now anyone can forge an email by messing with the From: header which Bugzilla blindly uses to figure out who to make the change as. We are proposing using a system where you send an initial email that returns a token to your email address. Then you pass that token with each subsequent Bugzilla email. The token would expire after maybe 24 hours or less. But due to higher priority projects and limited resources we have not yet been able to work on this. Of course it would be better if the upstream had time to work on or with us on this task.

As with the duplicate bug, we will only provide this if upstream do so with some type of authentication of the user. Using the from header alone is not an option for security reasons.
