Description Paul Ionescu 2009-09-23 22:37:00 UTC
Description of problem:

Using Xserver-ati with my Lenovo T42 system with ATI Technologies Inc RV350 [Mobility Radeon 9600 M10] video card.
KMS is activated and working, but if I enable desktop effects, it apparently works, for the moment, but eventually after some play, it hangs.
And not only when accessing 3D features; it hanged when reading a pdf doc in evince.

Version-Release number of selected component (if applicable):
Fedora rawhide latest updates.

How reproducible:
Randomly after enabling "desktop effects"

Steps to Reproduce:
1. Enable "desktop effects"
2. Work with the sistem
3. Sooner or later it hangs (not even network access)

Additional info:
When it freezes, the fan goes full speed (probably maybe due intesive cpu activity)

Thanks for the bug report. We have reviewed the information you have provided above, and there is some additional information we require that will be helpful in our diagnosis of this issue.

Please attach your X server config file (/etc/X11/xorg.conf, if available), /var/log/dmesg, and X server log file (/var/log/Xorg.*.log) to the bug report as individual uncompressed file attachments using the bugzilla file attachment link below.

We will review this issue again once you've had a chance to attach this information.

Thanks in advance.

Today it hanged without the "desktop effects" enabled. Network was also dead and the FAN goes to full speed.
KMS was enabled.

Comment 8 Nikolay Vladimirov 2009-09-30 21:02:01 UTC
I'm experiencing a similar thing. For me it's a full system freeze. Even Caps Lock doesn't work. Again it's a Thinkpad T42 with Radeon 9600. Freshly installed F11 and updated. No manual configuration( all the settings are system default).

I can no longer reproduce this.

I hanged for another one or two days after my last comment. But after that everything is rock solid. And I'm really torturing my T42.

Comment 12 Jérôme Glisse 2009-11-03 20:12:45 UTC
Paul do you still have hangs with last Fedora 12 (rawhide kernel) ? If so please tell us kernel & ati package version.

Comment 13 Matěj Cepl 2009-11-05 17:17:09 UTC
Since this bugzilla report was filed, there have been several major updates in various components of the Xorg system, which may have resolved this issue. Users who have experienced this problem are encouraged to upgrade their system to the latest version of their packages (at least F12Beta, but even better if the very latest versions).

Please, if you experience this problem on the up-to-date system, let us now in the comment for this bug, or whether the upgraded system works for you.

If you won't be able to reply in one month, I will have to close this bug as INSUFFICIENT_DATA. Thank you.

[This is a bulk message for all open Fedora Rawhide Xorg-related bugs. I'm adding myself to the CC list for each bug, so I'll see any comments you make after this and do my best to make sure every issue gets proper attention.]

Comment 14 Paul Ionescu 2009-11-06 08:33:43 UTC
Hi Jerome,

Lately I have not played extensively with F12, but I see improvement.
So far, I didn't had any freezes any more.
When I get some time I will stress it with open-gl apps and stuff.
The suspend-to-ram is not working well, but this is another issue, and probably I need to open another bug report for it.

Comment 15 Jérôme Glisse 2009-11-06 13:45:00 UTC
We pushed fix for suspend/resume especialy on AGP gpu, test with kernel -117 or newer if you got a chance.

Comment 16 Jérôme Glisse 2009-11-09 10:08:14 UTC
I am closing this bug, i believe issue are fixed with all the lastest stuff. Paul reopen if you experience your issue again with newer fedora12 kernel & ati driver.
