Description Gianluca Cecchi 2009-10-16 16:32:24 UTC

console 3 error messages

Description of problem:
I have qemu/kvm with host based on f11 x86_64 and rawvirt repo.
I have a guest that is a rawhide pre beta x86_64.
I run installation and select "install or upgrade system".
I go straight on and I select "reinstal system".
I choose default partitioning proposed without doing anything and only going through (the same was previously for the current rawhide installed guest).
I get the message that installation exited abnormally.
I don't know if it depends on same lvm names installation would give, taht matches the ones present on current system.
I attach console 1, 3 and 4 screens as I was able to capture..

Version-Release number of selected component (if applicable):
anaconda as released in dvd iso of beta rc2

How reproducible:
always

Steps to Reproduce:
1. start install from dvd iso x86_64 connected as dvd to guest
2. go through and select re-install system
3. select "replace existing linux system" in partitioning type window and select write changes to disk

Actual results:
abort

Expected results:
installation continues

Additional info:

I notice that if I assign to the guest 256Mb of ram, the installation decides to go in text mode and I get this problem.
Instead, if I assign 512Mb to the guest (based also on the OOM message in console 4 above) the install go graphic and goes straight on with same options selected

Comment 3 Gianluca Cecchi 2009-10-16 16:34:11 UTC
BTW: does this mean that minimum ram size for f12 is more than 256mb?

Comment 4 Gianluca Cecchi 2009-10-16 16:35:27 UTC
In my additional info I meant that with 512Mb and default graphical install, it completes correctly.

"BTW: does this mean that minimum ram size for f12 is more than 256mb?"

it's a tricky thing to pin down. it means the minimum for installing on x86-64 in a virtual machine may be above 256MB. I seem to recall we were revising the hardware requirements for f12 somewhere, but I can't find any reference to it now...oh, here it is: https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=499585

Comment 6 Chris Lumens 2009-10-19 18:01:00 UTC
For your specific installation case, it does appear that 256 MB is not enough. In particular, x86-64 installs appear to require more memory than i386 installs. Additionally, virt installs do appear to have higher requirements as well. Closing for now since they still appear to be sorting out the release notes.

Comment 7 Adam Williamson 2009-10-19 21:43:00 UTC
chris: you'll notice I re-assigned the bug to the release-notes component - I'd rather keep it open on that component until the docs guys are happy with the release notes and can close this bug accordingly.

No, I didn't notice that, or I would have left it open.

Comment 9 Paul W. Frields 2009-10-20 14:47:43 UTC
Reassigning into "more upstream" Docs product and component.

Comment 10 eric 2009-10-20 14:54:36 UTC
Release note added. If any revisions are required, please set the
"requires_release_notes" flag to "?" and edit the "Release Notes" field accordingly.

Please clarify what you want:

For i386:
Minimum RAM for text mode install
Recommended RAM for text mode install
Minimum RAM for graphical install
Recommended RAM for graphical install

For X86_64:
Minimum RAM for text mode install
Recommended RAM for text mode install
Minimum RAM for graphical install
Recommended RAM for graphical install

For PPC:
Minimum RAM for text mode install
Recommended RAM for text mode install
Minimum RAM for graphical install
Recommended RAM for graphical install

Comment 12 Adam Williamson 2009-10-20 20:59:37 UTC
it's somewhat complex because the exact type of installation being carried out, and whether the target is a virtual machine or bare metal, affect things. It's sufficiently complex that I'm not sure we can confidently put it into nice convenient 'minimum' and 'recommended' boxes.

I think we can say bare minimum for i386 is 128MB and x86-64 is 256MB (I believe that's what we already say), but it would be best to be very clear that in some cases even this will not be enough. 'Recommended' is a fairly unclear word.

Comment 13 Rahul Sundaram 2009-10-20 21:08:53 UTC
I think we can just recommend 256 MB for text and 512 MB for graphical installation to on the safer side.

Comment 14 John J. McDonough 2009-10-27 14:53:48 UTC
I added an admonition about using the minimum memory in the GA notes. Text is also on the wiki.
