GNOME panel with excessive icon spacing

Description of problem:
After updating to the latest "rawhide" build of gnome-panel, all panel icons are separated by an excessive horizontal spacing.

Version-Release number of selected component (if applicable):
gnome-panel-2.28.0-5.fc12.x86_64

How reproducible:
Always.

Steps to Reproduce:
1. Upgrade to gnome-panel-2.28.0-5.fc12.
2. Restart GNOME session.

Actual results:
Panel icons are separated by too large a spacing.

Expected results:
Spacing of panel icons is the same as before.

Additional info:
- Issue applies to all later versions up to gnome-panel-2.28.0-7.fc12, too.
- Downgrading to gnome-panel-2.28.0-4.fc12 restores previous behaviour.

I actually totally love this change, makes it much easier to position launchers in as sane way IMHO. Well, what I don't like is that the padding seems to be also applied to the rightmost icon in the notification area. Again, I would love it if this was applied to ALL notification icons, but for now only the NM icon seems to be affected as seen in this screenshot...

*bump*
A very irritating change for me. Please make it configurable if it must be included.

Comment 3 Bill Nottingham 2009-10-20 18:33:34 UTC
It *is* configurable.

Comment 4 Joachim Frieben 2009-10-21 07:30:03 UTC
Icon padding is correct again for gnome-panel-2.28.0-10.fc12. However, it seems that now, the notification area is borked. All applet icons are missing. Downgrading to gnome-panel-2.28.0-4.fc12.x86_64 restores them.

Moreover, installing gnome-panel-2.28.0-10.fc12 issues the following warning:

  $ rpm -Uhv gnome-panel*rpm

Comment 5 Joachim Frieben 2009-10-21 07:51:13 UTC
After upgrading to gnome-panel-2.28.0-11.fc12, applet icons are back, and the install warning is gone, too.

spacey panel

Just updated my desktop to F12. I can live with the extra padding, but on a panel without the expand checkbox checked, this extra padding seems to throw off the sizing. In this image, you can see that the clock applet has the right side chopped off.

Comment 7 Matthias Clasen 2009-10-29 14:49:49 UTC
Fixed in gnome-panel-2.28.0-12.fc12

unneeded padding

Confirmed -- new package fixes the unexpanded panel width problem.

The only minor nit is that this extra panel spacing is added between everything, even in places where it's not really needed. For instance, I have the workplace switcher and window list applets on this panel. Padding gets added between them, even though it's not really needed and would probably be cleaner looking if it didn't.

That a fairly minor complaint though.

Comment 9 Matthias Clasen 2009-10-29 15:25:42 UTC
Yeah, unfortunately no easy way to do that without making it a lot more complicated.

Comment 10 Jeff Layton 2009-10-30 18:35:24 UTC
I just updated another of my desktops to F12 and tried to install these gnome-panel and gnome-panel-libs packages. Once I did that, I was unable to log in. When I downgraded to:

    gnome-panel-2.28.0-11.fc12.x86_64

...it worked fine. I suspect that the difference here is that the other machines where I tested this were i686 and this one is x86_64. Let me know if you need me to collect other info.

Comment 11 Joachim Frieben 2009-10-30 18:37:56 UTC
$ rpm -q gnome-panel
gnome-panel-2.28.0-11.fc12.x86_64

.. works just fine.

Comment 12 Jeff Layton 2009-10-30 18:59:02 UTC
Oops. I posted that wrong...I meant that -12.fc12 wasn't working under x86_64 for me.

Comment 13 Jeff Layton 2009-11-02 20:28:34 UTC
Actually...this might be a problem with the nouveau driver. I ended up installing the binary nvidia driver and now the -12.fc12 package works fine. It must just be tickling some nouveau bug.

This bug appears to have been reported against 'rawhide' during the Fedora 12 development cycle.
Changing version to '12'.

This is the type of thing that should be configurable through a GUI.

I had to Google for this issue to find a solution.

This message is a reminder that Fedora 12 is nearing its end of life.
Approximately 30 (thirty) days from now Fedora will stop maintaining
and issuing updates for Fedora 12. It is Fedora's policy to close all
bug reports from releases that are no longer maintained. At that time
this bug will be closed as WONTFIX if it remains open with a Fedora
'version' of '12'.

Package Maintainer: If you wish for this bug to remain open because you
plan to fix it in a currently maintained version, simply change the 'version'
to a later Fedora version prior to Fedora 12's end of life.

Bug Reporter: Thank you for reporting this issue and we are sorry that
we may not be able to fix it before Fedora 12 is end of life. If you
would still like to see this bug fixed and are able to reproduce it
against a later version of Fedora please change the 'version' of this
bug to the applicable version. If you are unable to change the version,
please add a comment here and someone will do it for you.

Although we aim to fix as many bugs as possible during every release's
lifetime, sometimes those efforts are overtaken by events. Often a
more recent Fedora release includes newer upstream software that fixes
bugs or makes them obsolete.

The process we are following is described here:
http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/BugZappers/HouseKeeping

Comment 18 Bug Zapper 2010-12-04 07:26:59 UTC
Fedora 12 changed to end-of-life (EOL) status on 2010-12-02. Fedora 12 is
no longer maintained, which means that it will not receive any further
security or bug fix updates. As a result we are closing this bug.

If you can reproduce this bug against a currently maintained version of
Fedora please feel free to reopen this bug against that version.

Thank you for reporting this bug and we are sorry it could not be fixed.
