Description Gideon Mayhak 2009-10-21 21:37:56 UTC
Description of problem:
In F11 (and previous), there was the option to "Do nothing" when the laptop lid is closed on AC power. I used this preference to allow me to close my laptop lid when working with an external monitor.

I will often surf the web or watch a video on a larger external monitor that is just a mirror of my laptop display, so the laptop display is not needed. Now that there is no such option, I can no longer do this.

The closest thing I can choose is Blank, but that blanks both the laptop and external displays. I would like to either have the option to "Do nothing" again, or I would like Blank to only blank the laptop's internal display. I would think the former would be the better choice.

Version-Release number of selected component (if applicable):
gnome-power-manager-2.28.1-1.fc12.x86_64

Steps to Reproduce:
1. Running F11, choose "Do nothing" and close the lid
2. Running F12, choose "Blank" and close the lid

Actual results:
Both the internal and external displays are blanked.

Expected results:
Internal display is turned off, but external display(s) is (are) left on.

Comment 1 Richard Hughes 2009-10-22 08:01:11 UTC
I think what you really want is "Blank just the internal panel" as some machines actually melt (!) if you leave the internal panel on when the lid is closed. Unfortunately, Xorg doesn't give us per-panel DPMS control (yet) and instead sets it for all monitors.

I'm hesitant to add back "Do nothing" as it's an easy way to fry some laptops.

I can understand why you need this functionality tho. If you change the value of /apps/gnome-power-manager/buttons/lid_ac to "nothing" in GConf viewer, it'll behave like the old menu item.

Ajax, any idea when the per-panel Xrandr-based DPMS stuff is likely to happen?

Comment 2 Gideon Mayhak 2009-10-23 01:08:22 UTC
That works splendidly! Thank you very much for that tip. I can totally understand the reasoning behind removing that option from the list, so I'm happy to use this workaround for my situation. Just to note, so you won't be worried: my laptop's BIOS (?) automatically turns off the internal display when the lid is closed, and I've never had it get very hot when leaving it closed for hours at a time.

Now, shall I leave this bug open as a tracker for the larger feature of having a "Blank internal display only option"? Or should I close this as NOTABUG and let you guys work that out as possible?

This bug appears to have been reported against 'rawhide' during the Fedora 12 development cycle.
Changing version to '12'.

Comment 5 Felix Schwarz 2009-12-07 09:24:57 UTC
I would like to keep this bug open as long there is no explicit tracking bug so people can find it when looking for solutions.

Comment 6 Felix Schwarz 2009-12-07 09:26:53 UTC
I think the appropriate upstream bug is the https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=589736

This is the same issue in the Ubuntu bug tracker:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gnome-power-manager/+bug/390816

Any updates on this?

I'm having the same problem.. when I close the laptop lid BOTH the internal LVDS and external DVI display get blank! I don't want it to behave like that. I need to continue using the external DVI display.

When I have the laptop in the docking station (which most of the time), I only want to use the external DVI display, not the internal LVDS at all.

Comment 8 Pasi Karkkainen 2010-07-12 12:29:33 UTC
So please add "Do nothing" back! I'm using F13.

Comment 9 Pasi Karkkainen 2010-07-16 08:24:29 UTC
Upstream has re-added "Do nothing" as an option:

Comment 10 Bug Zapper 2010-11-04 09:17:30 UTC
This message is a reminder that Fedora 12 is nearing its end of life.
Approximately 30 (thirty) days from now Fedora will stop maintaining
and issuing updates for Fedora 12. It is Fedora's policy to close all
bug reports from releases that are no longer maintained. At that time
this bug will be closed as WONTFIX if it remains open with a Fedora
'version' of '12'.

Package Maintainer: If you wish for this bug to remain open because you
plan to fix it in a currently maintained version, simply change the 'version'
to a later Fedora version prior to Fedora 12's end of life.

Bug Reporter: Thank you for reporting this issue and we are sorry that
we may not be able to fix it before Fedora 12 is end of life. If you
would still like to see this bug fixed and are able to reproduce it
against a later version of Fedora please change the 'version' of this
bug to the applicable version. If you are unable to change the version,
please add a comment here and someone will do it for you.

Although we aim to fix as many bugs as possible during every release's
lifetime, sometimes those efforts are overtaken by events. Often a
more recent Fedora release includes newer upstream software that fixes
bugs or makes them obsolete.

The process we are following is described here:
http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/BugZappers/HouseKeeping

Comment 11 Bug Zapper 2010-12-04 07:24:41 UTC
Fedora 12 changed to end-of-life (EOL) status on 2010-12-02. Fedora 12 is
no longer maintained, which means that it will not receive any further
security or bug fix updates. As a result we are closing this bug.

If you can reproduce this bug against a currently maintained version of
Fedora please feel free to reopen this bug against that version.

Thank you for reporting this bug and we are sorry it could not be fixed.
