battery_applet doesn't dock into the panel when run from the command line, and the file which would allow you to start it from the panel is missing. battstat_applet doesn't allow you to show as much information in the same area.
Hmm. We removed the dekstop file to unclutter the menus from duplicate functionallity. It's really strange that starting the battery_applet doesn't make it show up in the panel though. All other applets do that.
Ok. If you start it with "battery_applet --activate-goad-server=battery_applet" it works.

No. We changed the default. If you've got an old user you probably have the old default.
I just removed ~/.gnome* and logged in again. Got battery_applet. Where are the defaults found? I'll check the packages are installed properly.
No, you're right. Crap. The defaults are hardcoded in the panel code. To late to fix though.
I fixed this in rawhide a week or two ago.
