Description Petr Šigut 2009-11-07 11:43:49 UTC
Description of problem:

After few minutes after login the screen goes black. Computer seems to react on my commands, so I can reboot with ctrl-alt-delete.

All updates made. I tried this Fedora rawhide to test suspend:

this commit should solve it:
http://git.kernel.org/?p=linux/kernel/git/airlied/drm-2.6.git;a=commit;h=ea1495a6274c9542a168337536f8ce74d1173f23

but - ale least on my computer Thinkpad R51e it does not, after resume the screen is black and caps lock blinking, only hardware reboot helps.

I will add any info needed, this is my first redhat bugzilla report, please be patient.

When the screen goes blank can you login through ssh and save the output of dmesg and attach it here. Please also gives the output of
rpm -q kernel xorg-x11-drv-ati xorg-x11-server-Xorg

Thanks.

This bug appears to have been reported against 'rawhide' during the Fedora 12 development cycle.
Changing version to '12'.

Have similar problems .I have a Dell dimension 2400, 512 ram. Screen goes black. monitor does not go into sleep mode. Have to turn computer off to restart. had the computer in this state for 30 minutes (the screen did not return). Happens suddenly and only every time I press enter. Hope this helps you.

Comment 15 Bug Zapper 2010-11-04 06:44:10 UTC
This message is a reminder that Fedora 12 is nearing its end of life.
Approximately 30 (thirty) days from now Fedora will stop maintaining
and issuing updates for Fedora 12. It is Fedora's policy to close all
bug reports from releases that are no longer maintained. At that time
this bug will be closed as WONTFIX if it remains open with a Fedora
'version' of '12'.

Package Maintainer: If you wish for this bug to remain open because you
plan to fix it in a currently maintained version, simply change the 'version'
to a later Fedora version prior to Fedora 12's end of life.

Bug Reporter: Thank you for reporting this issue and we are sorry that
we may not be able to fix it before Fedora 12 is end of life. If you
would still like to see this bug fixed and are able to reproduce it
against a later version of Fedora please change the 'version' of this
bug to the applicable version. If you are unable to change the version,
please add a comment here and someone will do it for you.

Although we aim to fix as many bugs as possible during every release's
lifetime, sometimes those efforts are overtaken by events. Often a
more recent Fedora release includes newer upstream software that fixes
bugs or makes them obsolete.

The process we are following is described here:
http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/BugZappers/HouseKeeping

Comment 16 António Lima 2010-11-18 19:00:06 UTC
I'm afraid this bug is still present in F14. I've had it since F12, but now the bug report is gone probably due to end of life of F12. Since I was using fglrx and didn't have the time then, I couldn't test.

Lockups started 1 day after I installed F14 and are becoming more frequent. Since I don't have ssh access to this computer right now I can't provide dmesg when the screen goes black.

The workaround nomodeset works as always.

I'm starting to get worried about this since gnome-shell does not run without KMS and it will be shipped with F15 (I guess).

I really hope it can be fixed. Please let me know if I can provide any thing that can help hunting this really annoying bug.

Comment 17 Bug Zapper 2010-12-04 03:28:13 UTC
Fedora 12 changed to end-of-life (EOL) status on 2010-12-02. Fedora 12 is
no longer maintained, which means that it will not receive any further
security or bug fix updates. As a result we are closing this bug.

If you can reproduce this bug against a currently maintained version of
Fedora please feel free to reopen this bug against that version.

Thank you for reporting this bug and we are sorry it could not be fixed.
