Description Gregory Maxwell 2009-11-09 12:16:19 UTC
Description of problem:
Fedora 12 RC.4 dvd image fails to boot with isolinux: disk error on x86_64.

System is a core2 system with an nvidia chipset motherboard. There are two seagate 7200.11 SATA disks attached.
with an IDE attached NEC ND-2510A DVD burner.

The same disk works fine on a thinkpad T60.

The blue bootloader menu comes up, and then the install option takes me to a black screen with

"isolinux: Disk error 80, AX = 4230, drive 9F

Boot failed: press a key to retry..."

I do not see the kernel or initrd load.

boot.iso from http://linux.mirrors.es.net/fedora/development/x86_64/os/images/ dated Nov-08 comes up fine.

Version-Release number of selected component (if applicable):
http://alt.fedoraproject.org/pub/alt/stage/12-RC.4/Fedora-12-x86_64-DVD/
[after it failed I rebooted into the F10 on this system and checked the checksums]
$ sha256sum Fedora-12-x86_64-DVD.iso
c899659b8a7ceb8f005fc1a300b4e21c984a48fd7b8d8a332ed24bf8c3c479e8
Fedora-12-x86_64-DVD.iso
$ sha256sum /dev/dvd
c899659b8a7ceb8f005fc1a300b4e21c984a48fd7b8d8a332ed24bf8c3c479e8 /dev/dvd

How reproducible:
Every time on this hardware. Attempted five times.

Steps to Reproduce:
1. Download F12 RC.4 x86_64 DVD iso.
2. Burn and Boot
3. Fail

Actual results:
Fail

Expected results:
Win?

Additional info:
(sorry for filing things against the Linux kernel, I can find a component for failures this early in the boot process.)

If you Google for this error, people hit it somewhat unpredictably on all sorts of releases - Fedora releases all the way back (earliest I saw was FC3), Ubuntu releases...I doubt it's anything specifically wrong with RC4. The standard cure seems to be a BIOS update, but Gregory says EVGA boards like his require that to be done from Windows and he doesn't have Windows, so it may be hard to test that.

Still, Gregory, once you're home I'd recommend:

a) check if the BIOS version is displayed when you boot or within BIOS configuration, and check on EVGA site if that's the latest version and if not what the changelog is (if you could post those details that'd be great)

b) see if there's actually a BIOS update tool within the BIOS configuration, there may be one that the website doesn't mention

c) if there's a BIOS update but no b), download it, and see if it might actually be a DOS-format executable you could run from a FreeDOS boot disk

thanks!

We're fairly sure this is a typical single-system randomness issue; we've received no other reports of it, so it doesn't seem to be a systematic thing. Dropping from F12Blocker.

Having same problem. Fedora 12 x86-64. Burned 2 dvd's at diff speed(2x and 8x).
CPU Pentium 4 2.66 G
Motherboard: Intel D101GGC
RAM: 512MB
Graphics NVidia 6200LE

The screen i am getting is

Boot from CD:
ISO LINUX 3.75 .....
isolinux: Disk error 80,AX = 4276, drive 9F

Boot failed

Any solution?

This message is a reminder that Fedora 12 is nearing its end of life.
Approximately 30 (thirty) days from now Fedora will stop maintaining
and issuing updates for Fedora 12. It is Fedora's policy to close all
bug reports from releases that are no longer maintained. At that time
this bug will be closed as WONTFIX if it remains open with a Fedora
'version' of '12'.

Package Maintainer: If you wish for this bug to remain open because you
plan to fix it in a currently maintained version, simply change the 'version'
to a later Fedora version prior to Fedora 12's end of life.

Bug Reporter: Thank you for reporting this issue and we are sorry that
we may not be able to fix it before Fedora 12 is end of life. If you
would still like to see this bug fixed and are able to reproduce it
against a later version of Fedora please change the 'version' of this
bug to the applicable version. If you are unable to change the version,
please add a comment here and someone will do it for you.

Although we aim to fix as many bugs as possible during every release's
lifetime, sometimes those efforts are overtaken by events. Often a
more recent Fedora release includes newer upstream software that fixes
bugs or makes them obsolete.

The process we are following is described here:
http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/BugZappers/HouseKeeping

Comment 5 Bug Zapper 2010-12-04 03:26:17 UTC
Fedora 12 changed to end-of-life (EOL) status on 2010-12-02. Fedora 12 is
no longer maintained, which means that it will not receive any further
security or bug fix updates. As a result we are closing this bug.

If you can reproduce this bug against a currently maintained version of
Fedora please feel free to reopen this bug against that version.

Thank you for reporting this bug and we are sorry it could not be fixed.
