Description of problem: There's need to get rid of net-tools (customers should be migrating towards iproute) or at least remove it from the default install (Bug #444036, comment #8). However hostname (part of net-tools) is not that case so separate hostname package is needed. Additional info: First possibility is to take hostname.c from net-tools. Nobody touched that code as long as changelog remembers. Second possibility is to take hostname from Debian, where it has been as separate package since 1997. Pros for Debian's hostname: - more mature (good looking) code - active development (see changelog at http://packages.debian.org/changelogs/pool/main/h/hostname/current/changelog ) - i'm in touch with Debian Hostname Team and they are open to changes (see http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=552482) - no need to create separate git repository for hostname Cons against Debian's hostname: - no localization and verbose mode (possible to add it back)
