The boot loader on the boot floppy displays the following message:

Press <return> (or wait 10 seconds) to boot you Red Hat Linux system from
0701. ...

0701 seems like a strange name for a boot image.  Perhaps this is just a
dated tag?

no, it's the major:minor number of root.
