Description Andrew McNabb 2009-11-13 17:46:54 UTC
The LTSP kernel postinstall script (/etc/kernel/postinst.d/ltsp) refers to initrd instead of initramfs. This means that /boot/initrd.ltsp is a dangling symlink, and Fedora 12 LTSP images are unbootable. On my Fedora 12 system, the initrd is called initramfs-2.6.31.5-127.fc12.x86_64.img, not initrd-2.6.31.5-127.fc12.x86_64.img. The postinstall script should create links to the correct filename.

Please let me know if there is any other information I can provide.

lrwxrwxrwx.  1 root root       36 2009-11-05 18:05 initrd.ltsp -> initramfs-2.6.31.5-122.fc12.i686.img

Not on my system. What version of ltsp-server did you run ltsp-build-client from?

Comment 2 Andrew McNabb 2009-11-13 21:26:02 UTC
The server is a Fedora 11 system (with ltsp-server-5.1.72-1.fc11.x86_64). Shouldn't the kernel postinstall script be created by programs within the client? How does the version of the ltsp-server come up?

Comment 3 Warren Togami 2009-11-16 05:10:35 UTC
oh, why are you building Fedora 12 based /opt/ltsp/i386 on Fedora 11 server?

I suppose that can work if the Fedora 11 version of ltsp is upgraded, but I don't have the time to test that the new versions of ltsp are fully compatible with Fedora 11. Want to put work into this?

Comment 4 Andrew McNabb 2009-11-16 16:45:04 UTC
I have an NFS server that's running Fedora 11, but I am upgrading the clients to Fedora 12. It's impractical to upgrade all of them at once. The clients should be independent of the server anyway. I always just assumed that any version-specific stuff was done by client-side RPMs.

As far as putting work into it goes, it depends on how much stuff is happening in ltsp-server that needs to be moved to ltsp-client.

Thanks for your help.

patch for chroot-creator

I'm attaching a proof-of-concept patch (which hasn't been tested) for chroot-creator. I think this approach should work pretty well and would lessen the amount of client-specific stuff on the server.

If this works, it should allow the following items to be removed from the install list for the server package:

%dir %{_sysconfdir}/ltsp/mkinitrd/
%{_sysconfdir}/ltsp/mkinitrd/*

Like I said, I haven't actually tested the patch, but I would love to hear whether you see any problems with this approach. Thanks.

Comment 6 Bug Zapper 2010-11-04 06:26:11 UTC
This message is a reminder that Fedora 12 is nearing its end of life.
Approximately 30 (thirty) days from now Fedora will stop maintaining
and issuing updates for Fedora 12. It is Fedora's policy to close all
bug reports from releases that are no longer maintained. At that time
this bug will be closed as WONTFIX if it remains open with a Fedora
'version' of '12'.

Package Maintainer: If you wish for this bug to remain open because you
plan to fix it in a currently maintained version, simply change the 'version'
to a later Fedora version prior to Fedora 12's end of life.

Bug Reporter: Thank you for reporting this issue and we are sorry that
we may not be able to fix it before Fedora 12 is end of life. If you
would still like to see this bug fixed and are able to reproduce it
against a later version of Fedora please change the 'version' of this
bug to the applicable version. If you are unable to change the version,
please add a comment here and someone will do it for you.

Although we aim to fix as many bugs as possible during every release's
lifetime, sometimes those efforts are overtaken by events. Often a
more recent Fedora release includes newer upstream software that fixes
bugs or makes them obsolete.

The process we are following is described here:

I still think it would be helpful to have chroot-creator call dracut within the chroot instead of copying files from the server.

Comment 8 Fedora End Of Life 2012-08-16 21:22:21 UTC
This message is a notice that Fedora 14 is now at end of life. Fedora
has stopped maintaining and issuing updates for Fedora 14. It is
Fedora's policy to close all bug reports from releases that are no
longer maintained. At this time, all open bugs with a Fedora 'version'
of '14' have been closed as WONTFIX.

(Please note: Our normal process is to give advanced warning of this
occurring, but we forgot to do that. A thousand apologies.)

Package Maintainer: If you wish for this bug to remain open because you
plan to fix it in a currently maintained version, feel free to reopen
this bug and simply change the 'version' to a later Fedora version.

Bug Reporter: Thank you for reporting this issue and we are sorry that
we were unable to fix it before Fedora 14 reached end of life. If you
would still like to see this bug fixed and are able to reproduce it
against a later version of Fedora, you are encouraged to click on
"Clone This Bug" (top right of this page) and open it against that
version of Fedora.
