Description of problem: Setup on HP network printer fails. Photosmart C6300 Series Setup does not found printer on network, when manual detection is used printer is found but will not install. /error: Printer queue setup failed. Please restart CUPS and try again. I have restarted cups and same problem persists. Version-Release number of selected component (if applicable): hplip-3.9.8-21.fc12.i686 How reproducible: run 'hp-setup' Steps to Reproduce: 1. Proceed through network printer setup steps and printer is not found. 2. Select advanced options, enter printer IP and printer is found. 3. Select printer and apply "/error: Printer queue setup failed. Please restart CUPS and try again." appears and hp-setup exits. Actual results: Expected results: Additional info: This may be an upstream issue. I noticed that HP does not have an hplip version for F12 yet. So this bug may have to wait for upstream to update their own drivers.
Is there a reason you need to use hp-setup instead of system-config-printer (available from System->Administration->Printing)? If you use that instead, what happens? Although I want to fix bugs in hp-setup, I'm more interested in getting the manufacturer-neutral solution working for everyone.
I tried system-config-printer and it worked fine. I just wanted to note that there are some issues in case someone chose to go the hp-setup route to install their printer.
I would like to ask for raising the severity of this bug to "critical" as I urgently need a fix for this issue. For several weeks I am not able to use my fax anymore (system-config-printer does not set this up, see bug 585109). In addition to this, the hp-setup utility is very convenient to use and worked fine before and the little applet tool "hplip-gui" allows printer administration, displays ink level etc. Something must have changed between cups/hplip that stops this from working and I would really appreciate if this problem could be solved quickly.
Peter, are you also seeing *this* bug, the one where setup fails with an error message "Printer queue setup failed. Please restart CUPS and try again."? Previously you had been seeing bug #583951. Have you applied the latest package updates? In particular I believe PyQt4-4.7.3-1.fc12 and sip-4.10.2-1.fc12 provide the fix for the bug in which hp-setup would crash with a segmentation fault.
Yes, I definitely run into *this* problem. Reproducable every time on two different systems trying to access a HP OfficeJet Pro 7680 via network. I have all available patches applied: --- [peter@samoa ~]$ rpm -q PyQt4 sip PyQt4-4.7.3-1.fc12.x86_64 sip-4.10.2-1.fc12.x86_64 --- My feeling is, that the PyQt-error was just a subsequent problem of the root problem (hp-setup fails to create CUPS print queues). Please let me know if I can do anything to assist in solving this issue.
Bug still exists in Fedora 13... :-(
In Fedora 13, I encountered this bug. It's pretty important as I need to set up a network scanner and fax, which I don't think I can do natively through CUPS. I was going to report this bug when I discovered that it this report. After trying a few things, I discovered that I could add the printer/scanner/fax with no printers configured (I am not sure if this part is necessary) and using hp-setup as root via sudo: sudo hp-setup. I created the printer, scanner and fax object with no problem. Tim Waugh: I understand your sentiments regarding generic support, but HP goes a lot further than most companies when it comes to Linux support. It might be nice to give them a little bit of support back.
I can confirm that everything works fine when running hp-setup as root.
same problem with latest version in fedora 13
This message is a reminder that Fedora 12 is nearing its end of life. Approximately 30 (thirty) days from now Fedora will stop maintaining and issuing updates for Fedora 12. It is Fedora's policy to close all bug reports from releases that are no longer maintained. At that time this bug will be closed as WONTFIX if it remains open with a Fedora 'version' of '12'. Package Maintainer: If you wish for this bug to remain open because you plan to fix it in a currently maintained version, simply change the 'version' to a later Fedora version prior to Fedora 12's end of life. Bug Reporter: Thank you for reporting this issue and we are sorry that we may not be able to fix it before Fedora 12 is end of life. If you would still like to see this bug fixed and are able to reproduce it against a later version of Fedora please change the 'version' of this bug to the applicable version. If you are unable to change the version, please add a comment here and someone will do it for you. Although we aim to fix as many bugs as possible during every release's lifetime, sometimes those efforts are overtaken by events. Often a more recent Fedora release includes newer upstream software that fixes bugs or makes them obsolete. The process we are following is described here: http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/BugZappers/HouseKeeping
This bug seems to have been fixed for me. Leaving open because I am not sure if the bug still exists for others.
