Description of problem: kernel dead Version-Release number of selected component (if applicable): How reproducible: with the default b43 Firmware, a while full speed downloading Steps to Reproduce: 1. 2. 3. Actual results: Expected results: Additional info:
the problem occurs everytime, easy to Reproduce. my Wlan Card: 02:00.0 Network controller: Broadcom Corporation BCM4311 802.11b/g WLAN (rev 01) there is no problem if i use the old firmwares
Thanks for the report! Information about yout issue was sent upstream. http://thread.gmane.org/gmane.linux.drivers.bcm54xx.devel/9813
Could you, please, provide us the following information about your system: - which firmware (closed) is loaded on the board to make it running - kernel version - which kind of device you are using (exact number, reported by the kernel and observed on the top of the chip). I advice you to attach dmesg output ( /var/log/dmesg ) also.
the firmware cause to crash ist b43-openfwwf-5.2-2, which is default installed on Fedora 12. - i removed the openfwwf-5.2-2 since some crashs then get this to work: http://downloads.openwrt.org/sources/broadcom-wl-4.80.53.0.tar.bz2 which runs up to now without any crash. But if i reuse the penfwwf-5.2-2 and download something even over 500kByte/s, after 2 minutes it crash again. So i think it should be the wireless's problem. - the kernel is 32bit 2.6.31, just the default kernel of Fedora 12 2.6.31.5-127.fc12.i686.PAE - The Chip is builtin inside laptop. It's not easy to get a look of its label. Informations that i found in dmesg : b43-phy0: Broadcom 4311 WLAN found (core revision 10) Broadcom 43xx driver loaded [ Features: PML, Firmware-ID: FW13 ] Should i try again the problematic Firmware? As the kernel crashs, did it left any information? if not, how can i help to find the bug? thank you for forgiving my poor english ---------------- Full dmesg (the firmware is the good one): ---------------- Initializing cgroup subsys cpuset Initializing cgroup subsys cpu Linux version 2.6.31.5-127.fc12.i686.PAE (mockbuild.phx.redhat.com) (gcc version 4.4.2 20091027 (Red Hat 4.4.2-7) (GCC) ) #1 SMP Sat Nov 7 21:25:57 EST 2009 KERNEL supported cpus: Intel GenuineIntel AMD AuthenticAMD NSC Geode by NSC Cyrix CyrixInstead Centaur CentaurHauls Transmeta GenuineTMx86 Transmeta TransmetaCPU UMC UMC UMC UMC BIOS-provided physical RAM map: BIOS-e820: 0000000000000000 - We need to see some output from the crashed kernel to diagnose the problem. Perhaps you can use netconsole (over a wired connection) to capture that info? Or perhaps you can get a dump on the console and take a digital picture? FWIW, the upstream b43 developers have stated that they are uninterested in problems that cannot be reproduced with the closed-source firmware. So, let's not bother them unless we can meet that demand or can otherwise show this to be a driver problem. :-)
I have been working with the openfwwf project regarding this bug. The kernel panic arises because the firmware returns a given skb twice. A patch to change the panic into an error message has been submitted. The openfwwf authors cannot duplicate. One thought is that the problem is due to my having a noisier environment that they have tested. To help test this hypothesis, please post the output of an 'iwlist scan' run as root.

This is a known problem with the openfwwf firmware. At present, it should only be used as long as it takes to download the proprietary firmware. The openfwwf authors are aware of the problem, but unable to duplicate it as yet. The latest kernels do not panic or crash when the error occurs - they just log the error.
(In reply to comment #10) > This is a known problem with the openfwwf firmware. At present, it should only > be used as long as it takes to download the proprietary firmware. I disagree with you, Larry. For example, I fully satisfied with openfwwf on both of my macs. So, it's not fair to tell that openfwwf almost totally useless - I'd rather say, that unfortunately it still has some hard-to-overcome limitations and strange quirks.
It is a problemm that the openfwwf fails so spectacular for some people, but I agree with Peter that it works quite well for a number of us as well.
The latest word from the openfwwf group is that they finally had a single failure in their lab, but have not been able to duplicate it. As I can make it happen reasonably easily, I did a Kismet capture that generated nearly 5 GB of data, then isolated the point of the failure and sent the data to them. I'm still waiting for their analysis. A couple of other points to consider: (1) The openfwwf code does not implement QoS. If you have any high-priority traffic such as VOIP, you may not get the desired results. (2) It does not use any hardware encryption/decryption, thus your CPU load will be greater. I did not intend to say that the openfwwf code was totally useless. If I felt that, I would not have done the many hours of code debugging intended to determine the cause of the failure, nor would I have loaned that group some of my hardware. It will also be useful when the open firmware supports other than revision 5 of the 802.11 core in the Broadcom chips.
Larry, rest assured that I appreciate your efforts! :-) As for which is better, it doesn't matter to Fedora since we have no license for the proprietary firmware. Our choice is simple -- some firmware or none at all. :-(
The same is true for openSUSE, my distro of choice. With the limited coverage of hardware, and the catastrophic failures, I cannot recommend that openfwwf be included with openSUSE.
This message is a reminder that Fedora 12 is nearing its end of life. Approximately 30 (thirty) days from now Fedora will stop maintaining and issuing updates for Fedora 12. It is Fedora's policy to close all bug reports from releases that are no longer maintained. At that time this bug will be closed as WONTFIX if it remains open with a Fedora 'version' of '12'. Package Maintainer: If you wish for this bug to remain open because you plan to fix it in a currently maintained version, simply change the 'version' to a later Fedora version prior to Fedora 12's end of life. Bug Reporter: Thank you for reporting this issue and we are sorry that we may not be able to fix it before Fedora 12 is end of life. If you would still like to see this bug fixed and are able to reproduce it against a later version of Fedora please change the 'version' of this bug to the applicable version. If you are unable to change the version, please add a comment here and someone will do it for you. Although we aim to fix as many bugs as possible during every release's lifetime, sometimes those efforts are overtaken by events. Often a more recent Fedora release includes newer upstream software that fixes bugs or makes them obsolete. The process we are following is described here: http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/BugZappers/HouseKeeping
Ping, wuchuanren! Could you, please, test whether this issue still exists in F-13 or F-14? Fedora 12 will be eoled very soon and we can't do anything here.
this problem does not occur in F-13 any more, the kernel does not crash , instead, wlan will be reseted during a highspeed transmission with opensource firmware
That is a known problem with the open source firmware. The openFWWF group has been working on the problem, but they have not found a solution.
Fedora 12 changed to end-of-life (EOL) status on 2010-12-02. Fedora 12 is no longer maintained, which means that it will not receive any further security or bug fix updates. As a result we are closing this bug. If you can reproduce this bug against a currently maintained version of Fedora please feel free to reopen this bug against that version. Thank you for reporting this bug and we are sorry it could not be fixed.
