Description CrystalCowboy 2009-11-20 21:18:09 UTC
Description of problem: Attempted to install F12 (i386) on a Core 2 Duo (mobile T5500) machine. BIOS found the DVD. Was given the installation menu. Prompted for language & keyboard. THEN, I was asked which hard drive partition contained the installation image, so apparently the USB DVD drive was not recognized. This problem did not happen with Fedora 6 or 11.

Version-Release number of selected component (if applicable): Fedora-12-i386-DVD.iso

How reproducible: I tried at least 3-4 times, results were 100% consistent.

Steps to Reproduce:
1. Load DVD, reboot
2. Go through install menu, language & keyboard choices
3.

Actual results: Get prompted for install image location. /dev/sda1 or /dev/sda2?

Expected results: Continue with installation

Additional info: ***** After reproducing this several times, I temporarily inserted a SATA DVD drive and successfully installed from that.

Please attach a picture of tty3 and tty4 to this bug report. Thanks.

Comment 2 CrystalCowboy 2009-11-28 19:03:14 UTC
I am sorry, I do not understand the request. You want me to enter a shell and do a "ls -l tty[3-4]" ? Or what?

Comment 3 Chris Lumens 2009-11-30 15:15:26 UTC
Press ctrl-alt-f3 and take a picture, then press ctrl-alt-f4 and take a picture, and attach the pictures to this bug report. Thanks.

I'm having the same issue. Previous release DVDs have worked fine with this laptop + USB DVD combo.

Also fails in rescue mode.

The only partitions offered to locate the install image are /dev/sda[1-3] on the internal hard drive. Pressing "F2 to configure additional devices" asks to "Insert your driver disk into /dev/sr0" which then fails with "Driver disk is invalid for this release of Fedora" (though it does spin up the DVD). No interactive console available to poke around further.

Is there anything other than the implication this will break installation from all USB DVD drives? Should there be an entry on:

tty3 photo attached.

I had this problem when installing from USB DVD too. I was using the netinst iso.

Anaconda prompted for the location of install.img, and gave me only HDD choices, not the actual DVD drive, but when I wanted to cancel the installation, because it was not working, and I pressed ESC, or Cancel, or whatever, the installation went to the next step, and there was no problem with the install.img, and the installation succeeded.

Ah, ok. So if, when presented with the list of partitions to select from, I choose "Back", then I'm taken to the "What type of media contains the rescue image?" dialog. Choosing "Local CD/DVD" here allows anaconda to continue without problem.

I am able to go "BACK" and select "Local CD/DVD." Thanks for the tip. These are mini-ITX boxes which do not have an optical drive, and I have 3 more to go.

This is hopefully fixed by this commit:
http://git.fedorahosted.org/git/?p=anaconda.git;a=commitdiff;h=436da6753f80dfafcfc242a2b08fccb81bf83ab9

If you could test things when the Alpha of Fedora 13 gets released (still some time away) that would be appreciated.

This bug still seems to be out there. I'm having the same issue with F13 (Fedora-13-x86_64-DVD.iso). I'm using USB DVD (Samsung SE-W084B) and everything is as outlined above. The workaround with BACK seems to be working, but I'm not completely sure about that. The installation totally hang a little bit after that.
