Description Need Real Name 2009-11-21 22:28:47 UTC
Description of problem:
My fresh/virgin install of F12 (running under VMWARE)suddenly crashed while idle (i.e. I wasn't doing anything ;).

The only syslog messages right before the crash were the following:
Nov 20 17:05:19 rtkit-daemon[1638]: The poor little canary died! Taking action.
 Nov 20 17:05:19 rtkit-daemon[1638]: Rampaging.
 Nov 20 17:05:19 rtkit-daemon[1638]: Demoted 0 threads.

Not sure what this all means since these error messages while perhaps cute are anything but informative (or to be blunt they are just a waste of bits & bytes).
As a result I don't know if this is the cause or just a byproduct of the immediately subsequent system crash.

In any case, not sure what it all means, what caused it or how to duplicate (though time will tell).

Perhaps someone could enlighten me on what is going wrong here and whether or not this is likely to be an rtkit bug

Is anybody following/acknowledging this bug report?

Comment 2 Lennart Poettering 2009-12-17 15:24:36 UTC
The system was frozen, and the canary watchdog detected that and tried to do something about this and looked for realtime threads that might be at fault here to demote them, to no luck.

This is merely a symptom of the system freeze, not the actual problem.

A request to change the wording of the msg has been filed in bug 530582.

Thanks for the clear explanation.

By the way, I tried to look up bug #530582 that you reference but I get back "You are not authorized to access bug #530582." Is there any reason this bug is hidden?
Especially, since you have now marked and closed my public bug report as a duplicate of an unviewable private bug. Just curious...
