Description Need Real Name 2009-11-26 10:17:24 UTC
clock-applet has a preference tab for weather for setting units for temperature and wind speed.
However, the actual temperature and wind speed don't seem to be displayed anywhere back to the user.

Is that information being used or is it broken or am I just missing something?

Of course, the weather applet does give you that information but it has its preferences set seperately and is part of a seperate package anyway so I don't think the preferences are being used there.

Comment 1 Matthias Clasen 2009-11-27 07:38:01 UTC
Have you tried checking the "Show weather" checkbox in the General tab ?

Comment 2 Need Real Name 2009-11-29 10:01:38 UTC
Of course I have that set and I should have been more clear in mentioning that...

Comment 3 Matthias Clasen 2009-11-29 21:01:54 UTC
Do you have any locations set up in the clock ? The weather is only shown if you have locations to get it for.

Comment 4 Need Real Name 2009-12-07 04:44:03 UTC
Yes - I certainly have a location installed.

Do you have a screenshot of how and where the weather appears? Maybe I'm missing something obvious because I can't figure out what it's not working here...

Weather in Gnome

I attached a screenshot of how Gnome shows the weather.

PS: I'm just a Fedora user trying to help.

Comment 6 Need Real Name 2009-12-14 15:15:51 UTC
Thanks for providing the visual...
So, on my screen I have the weather icon in the location area (as you do) but I do not have *any* weather info next to the date/time in the menu bar, nor do I have the pop up details that you show which I assume comes from hovering over and/or clicking the weather portion of the menu bar.

Again I have both "weather" and "temperature" enabled in the preferences. And indeed, when I toggle them on & off, I notice that the menu bar space for this applet changes slightly. However, *no* weather or temperature appears in the menu bar no matter what I do.

Any thoughts or ideas on how to troubleshoot this?

can you attach the output of

gconftool-2 -R /apps/panel/applets/clock

please?

I am experiencing the same problem with gnome-panel-2.28.0-16.fc12.i686, though I believe another F12 machine of mine (which unlike this one, was upgraded from F11 instead of being formatted first) is not experiencing this bug.

This is missing a subtree I'd expect to be there.

Actually, let's get the entire panel config. Can you run

gconftool-2 -R /apps/panel > panel.txt

and then attach panel.txt ?

Comment 13 Derek Atkins 2010-01-28 18:45:26 UTC
For what it's worth I'm seeing a similar issue. I have four locations set and I do get weather... But every once in a while the applet stops getting weather. When the applet stops receiving weather updates I only notice because the applet display in the panel 'freezes' (it'll stay stuck at the last update it got) and then if I open up the clock and display the locations it looks as if there is no weather configured.

If I open up the clock preferences and reset the locations then it will start retrieving weather again. To reset all I need to do is select a location from the list, click Edit, then click Ok from the dialog (I don't even need to change anything in the dialog!) Once I reset a location it will start getting weather for that location.

I've had this happen to me a couple times over the last couple weeks.

Comment 14 Daniel Stripes 2010-02-01 22:24:52 UTC
I have also been experiencing similar symptom on two f12 x86_64 systems. Specifically, no weather info is displayed on the clock-applet when collapsed. Yes, I have the "Show weather" and "Show temperature" boxes checked on the "General" tab of the "Clock Preferences" and I have my location (Manchester, New Hampshire, United States) as the only location in the list on the "Locations" tab.

As mentioned in Comment 6 above, the width of the collapsed applet changes when checking or unchecking the "Show weather" and "Show temperature" boxes but no icon or other information is displayed there.

If I left-click the date/time section of the collapsed applet, it pops down to show current month and locations map. Then hovering the mouse pointer over the icon associated with a location in that pop-down opens the balloon that contains the current weather information (e.g.-Clear Sky, temperature, wind direction and speed, sunrise and sunset information). This information balloon does not get displayed when hovering over the collapsed applet even near the left end where the icon should be displayed.

Resetting the location(s) does not result in the icon or other weather information being displayed in the collapsed applet in my case.

In addition to the information presented by me here and by others in previous comments, I add the following two items:

  (1) When I add a location, the applet crashes. Upon reloading the applet, the new location appears in the list and the applet is functional albeit with the very symptoms I described above in this comment; and

  (2) On a couple occasions, I have returned to my system after being AFK for some number of hours and found the screen blanked (expected and normal). What is strange and I believe may also be related to this bug is that moving the mouse and/or pressing a key on the keyboard does not bring it "alive" so I can enter my password and continue. When this happened, I connected via ssh from another machine, did 'killall clock-applet', and watched from across the room as the screen was "unblanked". I was then able to return to the local keyboard and continue my session.

I will attempt to provide a traceback for (1) above if needed and requested. Of course, there is no traceback for (2) as no (seg)fault occurs.

If these are considered unrelated to the original report and should be filed separately, I apologize in advance for my confusion.

Comment 15 Christopher Beland 2010-02-02 16:59:41 UTC
I noticed today that when I click on the time to show the calendar and world map, I do see the weather (partly sunny - but not the temperature) under "Boston". But as originally reported, no weather is shown when the applet is rolled up - only the date and time. I'm wondering if it has anything to do with having a crowded panel. When I'm on my local laptop display (right now I'm on a bigger monitor) the panel this applet is on is completely full.

Unfortunately, Derek's workaround in comment #13 doesn't work for me.

Daniel, I'm not seeing the symptoms you mentioned under (1) and (2) in comment #14 with gnome-panel-2.28.0-16.fc12.i686. I also don't get the popups you describe when I hover over the points on the world map or the entries below that for each location. You may be experiencing two or three unrelated bugs. I recommend triggering the crash in (1) and letting ABRT filing a bug for you, and filing (2) in a new bug report.

I believe if you hover your mouse pointer right on the sun or cloud or whatever icon appears between the clock, the location name (Boston?), and the digital time, you will see the more informative "weather balloon" popup and it will include temperature.

My panel is not even close to being full and, wondering the same thing when I first noticed this, I even moved icons/applets to "make room" for the clock applet to display the weather information. No joy. YMMV.

> Unfortunately, Derek's workaround in comment #13 doesn't work for me.

In case I wasn't clear earlier, it has not worked for me either.

> Daniel, I'm not seeing the symptoms you mentioned under (1) and (2) in comment

Perhaps that means those bugs have been resolved in -16, which I believe is still in the testing repo. I still have gnome-panel-2.28.0-15.fc12.x86_64 here since I have no packages installed from the testing repo(s).

> I also don't get the popups you describe when I hover over the

I don't get popups when hovering over the points on the world map and don't see where I described otherwise.

> or the entries below that for each location.

See my first paragraph in this reply. If I get the "detail balloon" when hovering over the icon, the icon, not merely the general vicinity of the location entry in the list, and you do not, then that is another inconsistency and begs the question, "Which is the intended behavior?"

> You may be experiencing two or three unrelated bugs.

Yes, as I alluded to in the last sentence of comment 14, I suspected that possibility. Really not knowing whether they might be related, I opted to bring them here first for scrutiny by all you who have more intimate knowledge and understanding of gnome-panel and the clock applet.

> I recommend triggering the crash in (1) and letting ABRT filing a bug for you,

I have done this... and found 554005 to be more appropriate.

> and filing (2) in a new bug report.

I will do this although it will be a vague report since I know no more than I presented above.

Thank you for the feedback. Should I edit or remove my comments about bugs that are seemingly unrelated to 541556?

Comment 17 Derek Atkins 2010-02-03 17:29:33 UTC
Perhaps what I'm seeing is a different bug. I *do* see the weather in the panel. The issue I have is that sometimes the weather gets "stuck" and stops updating, and when THAT happens I stop seeing weather in the drop-down list. The workaround is to refresh the locations and then weather will flow again.

Perhaps I need to open a different bug for what I'm seeing?

Comment 18 Christopher Beland 2010-02-14 01:09:19 UTC
Reply to comment 16: Ah, yes, I do see the temperature when rolled down if I hover over the small area of the cloud/sun/rain/snow icon. I don't think it's possible to edit comments in Bugzilla after they are posted, but don't worry about it.

Reply to comment 17: Yeah, it sounds different to me.

This message is a reminder that Fedora 12 is nearing its end of life.
Approximately 30 (thirty) days from now Fedora will stop maintaining
and issuing updates for Fedora 12. It is Fedora's policy to close all
bug reports from releases that are no longer maintained. At that time
this bug will be closed as WONTFIX if it remains open with a Fedora
'version' of '12'.

Package Maintainer: If you wish for this bug to remain open because you
plan to fix it in a currently maintained version, simply change the 'version'
to a later Fedora version prior to Fedora 12's end of life.

Bug Reporter: Thank you for reporting this issue and we are sorry that
we may not be able to fix it before Fedora 12 is end of life. If you
would still like to see this bug fixed and are able to reproduce it
against a later version of Fedora please change the 'version' of this
bug to the applicable version. If you are unable to change the version,
please add a comment here and someone will do it for you.

Although we aim to fix as many bugs as possible during every release's
lifetime, sometimes those efforts are overtaken by events. Often a
more recent Fedora release includes newer upstream software that fixes
bugs or makes them obsolete.

The process we are following is described here:
http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/BugZappers/HouseKeeping

Comment 20 Bug Zapper 2010-12-04 02:45:32 UTC
Fedora 12 changed to end-of-life (EOL) status on 2010-12-02. Fedora 12 is
no longer maintained, which means that it will not receive any further
security or bug fix updates. As a result we are closing this bug.

If you can reproduce this bug against a currently maintained version of
Fedora please feel free to reopen this bug against that version.

Thank you for reporting this bug and we are sorry it could not be fixed.
