Fedora 12, Fedora 11 Video Driver Issues

Description of problem:
Fedora 12 has major display driver issue much more than Fedora 11 as was also verified in the fedora forum. As such, both Fedora 11 and Fedora 12 cannot be use as the base platform for Red Hat 6 unless this critical issue is fixed completely. I have tried to fixed the /etc/X11/xorg.conf file, but failed. The video driver detection and installation should be automatic to prevent breaking the system integrity. It is far too much for the majority to correct the problem by installing third party drivers from Nivida or Intel. In fact, I could not start Fedora when I installed Nivida video driver some years back. In fact most do not know what they are doing by following the forums.

Version-Release number of selected component (if applicable):
Linux abc.web.my 2.6.31.5-127.fc12.x86_64 #1 SMP Sat Nov 7 21:11:14 EST 2009 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux

How reproducible:
Every time.

Steps to Reproduce:

1.

1A) Installing Fedora-12-x86_64_DVD failed; Installation hangs after the 'Enter global passphase' stage; The screen was blank and installation hangs.

1B) Need to install Fedora-11-x86_64_DVD fist and do a preupgrade to install Fedora 12; Fedora 12 display problem like refresh problem, unrecognisable characters, words too dim to read: need to include 'nomodeset' in /boot/grub/grub.conf at the kernel line to correct the problem.

1C)  Fedora-12-x86_64_DVD installation completely smoothly under 'Install system with basic video driver';  The display resolution was defaulted to 800x600;  The screen resolution could not be changed through System->Preferences->Display;  Fedora 12 failed to boot after changing /ext/X11/xorg11.conf;  To avoid breaking the integrity of Fedora 12, step 1B) above was used to install Fedora 12 and it took a day to complete the process;

1D)  The /boot and the encrypted / partitions can both be in ext4 file system in Fedora 12 and there was no problem starting Fedora 12 after completing the 1C) stage above;

1E) The passphrase screen is gone with 'nomodeset' and replaced with /dev/sdb11 is encrypted Passphrase: The screen is similar with a progress bar exactly like Fedora 10 after entering the passphrase.

2.

2A)  Installing Fedora-11-x86_64_DVD took more than two hours;  Installing packages like SELinux ... appears to hang and took about half and hour to get to the next package;  This may be due to the video driver problem;

2B)  Fedora 11 display problem like refresh problem, unrecognisable characters, words too dim to read:  need to include 'nomodeset' in /boot/grub/grub.conf at the kernel line to correct the problem;

2C) The /boot partition must be ext3 and encrypted / can be in ext4 file system for Fedora 11.

2D) The passphrase screen is gone with 'nomodeset' and replaced with Passphrase: The screen is similar with a progress bar exactly like Fedora 10 after entering the passphrase.

3.

3A) Installing Fedora-10-x86_64_DVD was completed smoothly; There was no display driver problem.

This appears unrelated to the xorg-x11-drv-radeonhd package.

Reassigning to xorg-x11-drv-ati.

Comment 2 Dave Airlie 2009-12-02 05:33:20 UTC
can you try with the latest fedora 12 kernel and xorg-x11-drv-ati packages?

Comment 3 SL Chong 2009-12-02 08:41:03 UTC
Problem still the same with latest kernel and xorg-x11-drv-ati. Please let me know if I am still missing any xorg-x11-drv-ati component. Send me the yum command to get the complete xorg-x11-drv-ati components.

TESTING PROCEDURE:
1)  sudo yum update
2) Remove 'nomodeset' from the kernel line in /boot/grub/grub.conf
3)  reboot

OBSERVATIONS:
A) The kernel and xorg-x11-drv-ati are the latest. Problem of bug number 542109 is the same and has not been resolved. Fedora 12 still has display problems like refresh problem, unrecognisable characters, words too dim to read.

SERIOUS BUG:
A1) This bug already exist but not reported yet. With 'nomodeset' remove from /boot/grub/grub.conf, when the Terminal was enlarged, the system will be directed immediately to the login screen. This also occurs when using $ sudo gedit /boot/grub/grub.conf or even expanding the File Browser.
B1) With 'nomodeset' remove from /boot/grub/grub.conf, Firefox Browser has display problems like refresh problem, unrecognisable characters, words too dim to read.

SYSTEM BUG:
1) Commands like $ sudo head -30 grub.conf takes about a minute to response if the ADSL modem is on!

PREVIOUS SERIOUS BUG GONE:
When Fedora 12 was run for a few days, the high pitch fan noise from my server (Dell PowerEdge 1800) since the earlier Fedora versions appears to be gone. This appears to the software related and not a hardware fault since the fan noise existed for more than a year and it is suddenly gone now.

Fedora 12 works fine with 'nomodeset' included in the kernel line.

Please explain your bug in few lines. What's wrong. Also open a single bug for each different issue. I simply don't understand what's wrong for you. Attach full dmesg and full Xorg log (don't paste, attach them).

Try booting with radeon.agpmode=-1 option that might help with whatever your issue is.

Comment 5 François Cami 2009-12-29 15:31:02 UTC
Hi SL,

Please add full dmesg with drm.debug=1 in the kernel command line, and /var/log/Xorg.0.log to this bug as separate text/plain attachments.

[Bug 542109] Display driver problem - 20091231

TEST SETUP:

This method is used to install Fedora 12 because the display driver problem cause the normal Fedora_12_x86_64-DVD installed process to hang up.
1. Install Fedora_11_x86_64-DVD (about three hours, also maybe caused by the display driver problem).
2. Upgrade to Fedora_12_x86_64-DVD via boot: linux usefbx (more than three hours).

This setup use only native Fedora repositories. No third party repos like adobe, rpmfusion or livna was used.
$ ls -la /var/cache/yum
total 16
drwxr-xr-x.  4 root root 4096 2009-12-27 17:38 .
drwxr-xr-x. 16 root root 4096 2009-12-27 16:36 ..
drwxr-xr-x.  3 root root 4096 2009-12-31 15:10 fedora
-rw-r--r--.  1 root root    0 2009-12-27 17:38 .gpgkeyschecked.yum
drwxr-xr-x.  3 root root 4096 2009-12-31 15:10 updates

The setup was updated to the latest Fedora 12 system on 20091231, 15:00 Malaysian time.
$ sudo yum clean headers metadata dbcache
$ sudo yum update

----------------------------------------------------------------------------

OBSERVATIONS AND RESULTS:

The following is the immediate data for you attention. I did saw a few of the Xorg packages updated during the previous update on 20091228. The problem still exist. This problem started from Fedora 11, but Fedora 11 could be installed from DVD although very slow at 3 hours. Fedora 12 DVD could not be installed from the normal graphical mode. This is a serious bug since it is broken at the start and will drive the customers away. Fedora 11 have to be installed first and then do a preupgrade to Fedora 12. Preupgrade is only possible in the first two weeks. Now preupgrade to Fedora 12 failed because of the many dependencies since 20091117. I found that my type of machine can be upgraded with Fedora 12 DVD via boot: linux usefbx after installing the Fedora 11 first although upgrading to Fedora 12 via linux usefbx took more than three hours.

This problem did not exist in Fedora 10 and it is a good start to work from Fedora 10. Could the new features and changes in Fedora 11 and Fedora 12 that broke the Xorg packages, if Xorg is the source of the problem? ATI drivers is third party and it may need to work around the ATI core rather than begging ATI for drivers update because the businesses come and go.

To get around this problem, I added 'nomodeset' in the kernel boot. The starting screen has the effect like Fedora 10 with the progress bar at the bottom.

The following is the get around that works.
kernel /vmlinuz-2.6.31.9-174.fc12.x86_64 ro root=/dev/mapper/luks-af8652ed-9f57-400e-a35b-cc60a8315ebd rhgb quiet nomodeset SYSFONT=latarcyrheb-sun16 LANG=en_US.UTF-8 KEYTABLE=us

The following is no good. The progress bar is like Fedora 10, but 70% smaller. Display problem still exist.
kernel /vmlinuz-2.6.31.9-174.fc12.x86_64 ro root=/dev/mapper/luks-af8652ed-9f57-400e-a35b-cc60a8315ebd rhgb quiet SYSFONT=latarcyrheb-sun16 LANG=en_US.UTF-8 KEYTABLE=us

The following as suggested by bugzilla is no good. The progress bar is like Fedora 10, but 70% smaller. Display problem still exist.
kernel /vmlinuz-2.6.31.9-174.fc12.x86_64 ro root=/dev/mapper/luks-af8652ed-9f57-400e-a35b-cc60a8315ebd rhgb quiet radeon.agpmode=-1 SYSFONT=latarcyrheb-sun16 LANG=en_US.UTF-8 KEYTABLE=us

This variation is also no good. The progress bar is like Fedora 10, but 70% smaller. Display problem still exist.

I still don't understand your issue with kms. Please explain in 2 _lines_ what is wrong ? Is the screen black ? Is the picture on the screen distorted some how ? Does the computer fails to boot ? ...

Also attach full dmesg with KMS enabled and lastest fedora 12 kernel. Thanks.

Display bug: dmesg-542109-20100117

1) Rubbish displayed on both the top menu bar and the botton status bar. Opening browser immediately go to login screen -> cannot test whether rubbish would still be displayed on browser since the browser cannot be opened.

2) Fainter display on all windows like Terminal and browser. Menu item like 'Close Tab Shift+Ctrl+W' of Terminal Window too faint to read. Basically, the display bugs, described previously, are still there and still exist. Update done at 20:00 GMT on 20100117.

Screenshot-542109-20100118-f12-A.png is a new bug that exist in Fedora 12 since December 2009. This bug is from PackgeKit. It also exist in all notifications like NetworkManager and others. The kernel was booted up with the option 'nomodeset'.

All the display problems that exist in this server did not exist in another machine, Acer Aspire E500, booted up from a USB Flash Drive running the full version of Fedora-12-i386-DVD, tested on 20100110.

System on test not updated before 02:00 GMT 20100118. This bug but could not be reproduced on the latest version after the system was updated at 03:00 GMT 20100118.

The screen can be cleaned by opening a Terminal and dragged it like a brush to clean up the display garbage. There are six workspaces in this setup. It appears that all the workspaces inherit the same problem, that is if one workspace has the problem, all the other five workspaces has the same display problem.

Screenshot-542109-20100118-f11-D.png is the crunch. This problem exist in both Fedora 11 and Fedora 12. The whole Fedora 11 or Fedora 12 will freeze up after some time. It happened in this test in lest than 15 minutes after booting up. System on test not updated before 02:00 GMT 20100118. This bug was not be reproduced on the latest version after the system was updated at 03:00 GMT 20100118. The system response was observed to be slower.

The system does not response to any mouse or keyboard input. The only way is to power down and then power up the system again.

Comment 14 SL Chong 2010-01-18 11:50:10 UTC

Please inform if you need to test it in your standard procedure, like the steps and the scripts to run the test. Keep up with the excellent Linux work. I have to ask though. Why does simple bugs that did not exist in the previous version emerge in the latest versions? Like there were NetworkManager problems in Fedora 9 that did not exist in Fedora 8. Then there is the slow sudo problem in Fedora 11 and Fedora 12 that did not exist in Fedora 10. A new testing process has to be revised. First, look into the concept of 'Design for Testability'. Then look into the ways and process to do an exhaustive test on every code modification, even change make to a single line. As a means to improve on the software engineeing process, perhaps all the coders are to be supplied with a standard scripts that will do an exhaustive test on the modules and the overall system. The best person to do the test is actually the person making the code change because this person know what test to addon to the main script to cover all the consequences in a single code change.

Fedora 12 could not be tested like Fedora 11 because of a new bug. The latest Fedora 12 system, since December, will immediately go the log-in screen on starting the Firefox application. The system will also go to the log-in screen when you try to 'Maximize Window'.

can you try F-12 yum --enablerepo=updates-testing upgrade xorg-x11-drv-ati plymouth libdrm mesa-libGL xorg-x11-server-Xorg

and see if this problem persists.

The different sizes of the text at boot isn't a bug thats how modesetting works.

Test Results and Observations - 20100119

@Dave Airlie

Well done. Almost 90% of previous display bugs are gone. See the Attachment-20100119 for details.

There is still an existing display bug, an existing boot display bug and possible a new bug which I will log them in the next three comments.

Could you prepare and incorporate the packages into the whole Fedora 12 system when all the display problems have been resolved via yum update? There may be three more to go at this stage. Please inform when you are ready for the next round of test.

Display too dim to read

P1090059.JPG showed the existing display bug since the first version of Fedora 11 and still exist in the latest version of Fedora 12.

Font is slightly different to that of a normal display. It is slimmer and dimmer in all display windows like Firefox, Terminal, etc. Some areas within the browser is too dim to read.

You won't see this problem because your PC does not have this display problem in the first place. I have attached P1090059.JPG to make it clear. In the Firefox Browser, the six sub-menu items below Edit and above 'Select All Ctrl+A' at the top left corner could not be read. Also, the information below the 'More Secrets', 'Spread the Word', and 'Get Involved' is too faint to be read.

This bug is confusing and I will try to explain a bit more. When I booted up without 'nomodeset' and took the screen-shot, I could see the display problem. Then when I booted up with 'nomodeset' and open up the screen-shot, it appears to be normal. That is why I have to attach a photo to make it clear to you.

Boot up in Standard Graphical Mode

Existing bug: Ideally it should be booted to the graphical passphrase screen like boot-p1090046.jpg to be consistence across all machines.

It may be harder to maintain since the system behave differently on different machine. For your reference, Fedora 11, in the normal mode, will boot up with boot-p1090046.jpg and not in text mode.

This bug was not reproduced in later test.

Fedora 12 was booted from and run from a 16GB USB Flash-Drive on a i386 machine and not from a normal Hard Drive. The whole Fedora 12 system is self-contained on the 16GB USB Flash-Drive.

Comment 37 Bug Zapper 2010-11-04 05:06:16 UTC
This message is a reminder that Fedora 12 is nearing its end of life.
Approximately 30 (thirty) days from now Fedora will stop maintaining
and issuing updates for Fedora 12. It is Fedora's policy to close all
bug reports from releases that are no longer maintained. At that time
this bug will be closed as WONTFIX if it remains open with a Fedora
'version' of '12'.

Package Maintainer: If you wish for this bug to remain open because you
plan to fix it in a currently maintained version, simply change the 'version'
to a later Fedora version prior to Fedora 12's end of life.

Bug Reporter: Thank you for reporting this issue and we are sorry that
we may not be able to fix it before Fedora 12 is end of life. If you
would still like to see this bug fixed and are able to reproduce it
against a later version of Fedora please change the 'version' of this
bug to the applicable version. If you are unable to change the version,
please add a comment here and someone will do it for you.

Although we aim to fix as many bugs as possible during every release's
lifetime, sometimes those efforts are overtaken by events. Often a
more recent Fedora release includes newer upstream software that fixes
bugs or makes them obsolete.

The process we are following is described here:
http://fedoraproject.org/wiki/BugZappers/HouseKeeping

Comment 38 Bug Zapper 2010-12-04 02:39:27 UTC
Fedora 12 changed to end-of-life (EOL) status on 2010-12-02. Fedora 12 is
no longer maintained, which means that it will not receive any further
security or bug fix updates. As a result we are closing this bug.

If you can reproduce this bug against a currently maintained version of
Fedora please feel free to reopen this bug against that version.

Thank you for reporting this bug and we are sorry it could not be fixed.
